Chapter 1358
Jessica was unable to complete the task assigned to her by the mysterious woman. Concerned that her family might be targeted again, she asked Hank to take her home.
Her family also lived in the countryside.
Hank was not particularly fond of visiting his mother-in-law. Each time he went, she would complain about feeling unwell and mention that she needed various things at home. Out of sympathy, he would give her some money during these visits.
Although he didn’t give much, this occurred every time he visited, leaving him feeling uncomfortable, as if his mother-in-law viewed him as an ATM.
Fortunately, Jessica genuinely cared for Hank and wished to spend her life with him. When his mother-in-law demanded a high bride price, Jessica stood by Hank’s side and secretly obtained their marriage license without her parents’ knowledge. There was little her mother could do about it.
Eventually, the bride price was lowered to tens of thousands of dollars.
Even so, this amount was still significant for Wiltspoon’s countryside. Both families were ordinary and not wealthy, making it difficult to compare with affluent families.
However, after receiving the bride price, the Yateses insisted that the Browns cover the costs of the wedding reception or there would be no celebration at all. If that were the case, the Yateses planned to bring a group of relatives to the city for a wedding dinner at the Browns’ residence instead.
Hank discussed this with his parents and ultimately agreed to the Yateses’ terms. On the wedding day, both families and their relatives would gather to celebrate together.
The reception was arranged at a restaurant, but they refrained from choosing an upscale hotel, as it was beyond their budget.
The Yateses would not provide Jessica with a dowry; they only offered her a few pieces of bedding.
