preferred to keep her emotions in check. She joined her husband and Callum, expressing her gratitude to Callum as well.
Camryn joined them after changing into a fresh outfit and slipping on a pair of slippers.
Callum glanced at her and noticed that she had returned to her usual stoic demeanor. He grimaced and chose to remain silent.
She approached him and sat on the edge of the couch, listening passively as her mother and stepfather argued with the bodyguards.
Her stepfather rambled about wanting to call the police, but her mother stopped him, voicing concerns about the potential damage to Camryn’s reputation.
“Mr. Newman, Mrs. Newman, it’s getting late. I’ll be heading home first,” he announced.
The Newman couple were skilled actors, and Callum knew better than to be fooled by their charade. He resolved to uncover the identity of the scoundrel who had tried to exploit Camryn. Once he had sufficient evidence, he would seek justice for her.
He stood up and stated solemnly, “Mr. Newman, Camryn is a good friend of my sister-in-law, who cares for her deeply.”
Mr. Newman responded anxiously, “I understand. It is a great honor to say that my niece has a strong relationship with Mrs. York. I truly appreciate Mrs. York looking out for her tonight and trusting you to bring her home. I wouldn’t know what to do if something happened to Camryn; I would have failed in my duties and let her father down.”
His face was twisted in a tight expression of agitation.
“I will assign a new female bodyguard to her starting tomorrow and will take special care to ensure her safety at all times,” Mr. Newman assured as he accompanied Callum out of the house.
Mrs. Newman followed behind them.
Camryn did not see Callum off, but she stood, facing him as he left.
After the sound of their footsteps had faded, she retreated to her room, shut the door, and locked it. This was the only way she felt secure.
Once Callum had left, Mr. Newman exchanged a glance with his wife, and only then did they head back into the house. They chose not to bother Camryn again and quietly ascended the stairs. After returning to their bedroom and ensuring the door was closed, Mrs. Newman spoke firmly to her husband, “I do not agree with the decision you’ve made. I understand this is all to save Carrie, but I cannot bear the thought of Camryn marrying into the York family.”
She would have preferred death over witnessing such an arrangement unfold. All she wanted was for her beloved Carrie to marry into the Yorks.
