“I wanted to make sure you got home safely, even if you wouldn’t let me take you,” Camryn said, feeling a deep sense of gratitude toward Serenity. She had always believed she could protect herself, but the events of that night had been a harsh wake-up call. No matter how bright and independent she considered herself, her blindness would always be a significant vulnerability.
She had to come to terms with the fact that she was not a valkyrie from ancient tales. Although she carried a pocket knife, she realized it was more likely she would hurt herself in a struggle than use it effectively for self-defense. She viewed it as a last resort for desperate situations.
“The most important thing right now is to heal your eyes,” Callum said as he guided her along the winding path. With him leading the way, Camryn no longer needed to worry about tripping over roots, but Callum had to modify his pace to match hers.
He felt he should have insisted on carrying her, but he worried that would exhaust him. He also regretted not driving the car to her initially, which would have saved him from so much walking. If Serenity were with them and could read his thoughts, she would undoubtedly have a lot to say—likely teasing him and suggesting that this was why he was single.
“Of course, I want that too. Nothing matters more to me than recovering my eyesight. Right now, my best option is to find that genius doctor everyone says works miracles. My aunt went to Annenburg to see him a while back, but she called to inform me that he had left and no one knew his next destination.” Such miraculous healers had a tendency to disappear without a trace. Callum was aware that the doctor was no longer in Annenburg and knew he couldn’t ask Josh for help in locating him.
Doctor. He recalled Josh mentioning that his family was hesitant to reach out to the group of brilliant doctors from decades past and would prefer not to do so. The only option left was to wait. His brother had told him about a certain Dr. Leigh, who had a history with the Johnson siblings. Moreover, this doctor was friends with Mrs. Young–Johnson. It was rumored that the child Mrs. Young–Johnson had taken under her wing had piqued Dr. Leigh’s interest, and she intended to nurture the child to become his successor. Callum believed he should keep an eye on the Johnsons. It was only a matter of time before he heard news regarding either Dr. Leigh or the other doctor reputed to be a miracle healer. Additionally, he had been searching the country for renowned ophthalmologists.
