The atmosphere in the house had shifted since the missus arrived, and he understood that if he wanted a raise or a promotion, he needed to earn her trust above all else.
The Yorks had hired numerous bodyguards, but Jim was the only one the missus recognized by name, a fact he took pride in.
“Jim…”
“Alright, I’ll wake them up.”
Jim ceased his banter with the driver and called out in a bright voice, “Sir, we’ve arrived.”
Zachary barely stirred.
Jim attempted to rouse him again.
Finally, it appeared that Zachary was awake.
The driver then chimed in, “Sir, we’re home.”
Jim shot him a glance, and the driver responded with a sly smile.
Jim refrained from saying more; he realized that everyone was ultimately looking out for their own interests.
Once Zachary was awake, Jim and the driver exited the vehicle and opened the door for him.
Zachary made no effort to wake Serenity. He doubted she would awaken, as she was completely out cold. She had a tendency to fall into a deep sleep after drinking and wouldn’t stir even in a raging thunderstorm.
He stepped out of the car, carrying Serenity in his arms.
Sam, the butler, emerged from the house to greet him.
“Welcome back, sir.”
“Keep your voice down; she’s asleep,”
Sam immediately fell silent upon hearing this and followed Zachary into the house.
Once inside, Zachary made his way to the upstairs bedroom, still cradling Serenity.
Sam waited until Zachary had ascended the staircase and was out of sight before turning around and heading outside. He called over to Jim, who was about to take a break, and kept his voice low, “Did anything
“What happened to them at the banquet tonight?”
“Nothing unusual.”
“They didn’t get into a fight or anything like that, did they?”
Jim bluntly replied, “Sam, you’re not secretly hoping they would get into a fight, are you?”
“You brat! I just wanted clarification in case I say something I shouldn’t tomorrow.”
“No, they would never fight. Have you seen how much Mr. Zachary pampers the missus?”
Sam felt relieved to hear this and shared, “This morning, the missus woke up earlier than usual to visit her sister. Mrs. Lane told me that when Mr. Zachary woke up and found the missus missing, he was quite upset.”
Mr. Zachary was a very loving husband to the missus, but he could be overbearing at times.
