Chapter 1290
Camryn walked around the cash register to get the roses for Callum.
As if sensing footsteps, Camryn paused and turned to face Mrs. Newman. She blandly said, “Mom.”
Mrs. Newman first checked out Callum. Unable to pinpoint the familiar face, she forced a smile and asked, “You look familiar, sir. Who are you?”
The owner of the Maybach was no ordinary man.
Straightening his posture, Callum turned to meet Mrs. Newman’s gaze. He politely replied, “Callum York.”
“Ah, Callum York.”
Mrs. Newman could count on one hand the times she had met the nine heirs of the York family, as they rarely attended social events.
Most people likely would not recognize the York boys or know their names, had they not entered the corporate world.
The York family had done an excellent job of shielding their children from public scrutiny.
Mrs. Newman smiled broadly at the mention of Callum’s name.
She aspired to be friendly with the York boys, hoping her daughter might marry into the family.
Although Mrs. Newman found it odd that Callum was buying flowers at Camryn’s shop, she decided it wasn’t the right time to dwell on that.
“Hello, Mrs. Newman,” Callum greeted her politely.
With a smile, Mrs. Newman asked, “I heard you’re buying flowers for your fiancée. Who’s the lucky girl? Why haven’t I heard about your engagement?”
It was unfortunate that Zachary had married a country girl like Serenity.
Fortunately, Zachary had eight brothers and cousins.
Aside from Zachary and the two youngest in his family, there were five boys who would be well-suited for her daughter Carrie.
Upon learning that Callum was engaged, Mrs. Newman was eager to know who the girl was.
Carrie was not out of the running.
The woods were still untouched. Since Serenity had sued Carrie again, Mrs. Newman and her husband had been brainstorming ways to secure their daughter’s release from jail. They also arranged to hire the best defense attorney for her.
Although Carrie hired people to attack Serenity and vandalized her car, Serenity did not sustain any physical injuries. If Serenity chose to forgive Carrie, she would likely receive only a light sentence. However, Serenity, a country girl, was unwilling to let Carrie off easily.
The root of this conflict was none other than Camryn.
Mrs. Newman had never liked Camryn; in fact, she wished her daughter were dead. It was her husband who persuaded her to spare Camryn’s life, as Camryn was blind and the only child of her deceased ex-husband.
Callum grinned and said, “We’re not engaged yet, but she already feels like a wife to me. We’ll have an engagement party when I propose, and I’ll send you an invitation. I hope you can attend.”
Despite Mrs. Newman’s hostility towards Camryn, she remained Camryn’s mother.
Callum would happily send an invitation to his future mother-in-law when he got engaged to Camryn, giving her the opportunity to attend their engagement party.
This was sure to annoy Mrs. Newman.
Mrs. Newman had no idea that Callum’s fiancée was the daughter she despised. In response to Callum’s comment, Mrs. Newman smiled and replied, “Thank you for the invitation, Callum. I would be delighted to attend your engagement party.”
Despite the tensions between the Newmans and Zachary and his wife, Mrs. Newman still dreamed of marrying her younger daughter into the York family.
At worst, Carrie could exclude Zachary’s younger brother from consideration as a potential husband.
