Chapter 1220
Jasmine rubbed her forehead and said, “I know you never loved Shawn. I was just worried you might feel guilty. Shawn is fine as he is now. As the family’s successor, he needs to face some hardships and setbacks to grow and become more stable.”
“Aunt Rachel did all that for his own good. It’s actually beneficial that he was sent away to train. What reason do I have to feel guilty?”
Serenity sat at the counter and pulled out her phone. “I’ll let my man know about this to prevent any jealousy or misunderstandings.”
It was better to inform Zachary directly than for him to hear it from the bodyguards.
Given Zachary’s personality, he would likely become jealous if he learned from his bodyguards that she had met Shawn.
Jasmine headed into the kitchen.
After a short time, she returned with a plate of grapes and placed it on the counter, saying, “Shawn bought these—seedless grapes, just like we usually eat.”
“So, what’s the verdict? Was your dad your grandparents’ biological son?” Jasmine asked with concern as she took a seat.
“Yes. The DNA test I took with my granddad confirmed that we’re biologically related. After I showed the report to John and the others, they finally calmed down and stopped causing a fuss.”
“We resolved the issue through negotiation.”
Serenity picked up a bunch of grapes and popped one into her mouth. “These grapes are deliciously sweet.”
Seeing Serenity in high spirits, Jasmine smiled. “It’s wonderful that you’ve sorted things out. You won’t have to deal with them in the future.”
“We’re going back tomorrow to sign a new agreement with them. I’ll give them the money once they transfer the title deed of the house to my sister.”
“Did you buy their share of the land?”
Serenity nodded. “Yes, the…
The solution they proposed was either for us to buy their shares or for them to buy ours. My grandparents don’t have much money left, so it would be quite costly if they decided to purchase our shares.
“He has several sons and grandchildren, but none of them are willing to pay. He was so angry that he insisted we buy his share instead, claiming they would keep the money for their retirement. They will continue living in the house, but his children will cover the rent and utilities.
“I didn’t want to argue over details like this, but since they attempted to take advantage of us, I had no choice. It’s not as if my dad was his only son; he has four sons. Even though my dad is no longer here, he still has three brothers.
“In rural areas, each family typically pays for their parents’ expenses or takes turns living with and caring for them while the elders are still alive. They can’t just live in my house for free, right? That’s why I asked for compensation. I don’t need the money; I just don’t want to be taken advantage of.”
Jasmine said, “You did the right thing. They only know how to exploit others for their own benefit, but when it comes time for them to face old age, they shift the responsibility onto your family.”
“John said he wanted his share of our granddad’s assets but had nothing to do with Granddad’s care in retirement. He argued that while Granddad gave birth to his dad, he didn’t give birth to him, so caring for Granddad in his old age was not his responsibility. The old man was furious.”
Although Serenity believed Old Mr. Hunt was finally facing the consequences of his actions, she felt neither happy nor satisfied. Instead, she felt pity for her parents.
Her parents were extremely devoted to their own parents while they were alive, yet the more filial her dad was, the less her grandfather appreciated him. Even after her dad passed away, he continued to be mistreated by his own parents.
Jasmine paused. “Isn’t John your granddad’s favorite? He used to earn an annual salary of a million dollars while working at Elisa’s company. Elisa caused him to lose his job, and honestly, he deserved it. Someone like him shouldn’t be living well.”
“Old Mr. Hunt fought for my family’s property because he wanted to leave everything to John, so John’s comments really angered him. That’s why he quickly agreed to the solution we proposed.”
Serenity sensed that her granddad’s rapid compromise was largely influenced by the hurt he felt from his sons and grandsons’ attitudes.
Regardless, the issue with the house was settled.
