Sonny, feeling neglected by his aunt and uncle, nudged Serenity away from Zachary. Confused, Serenity straightened up as the boy climbed onto Zachary’s lap and settled himself there.
Leaning back, Sonny rested against Zachary’s chest, appearing quite relaxed.

“Sonny,” Zachary said, relaxing his facial muscles as he leaned down to kiss Sonny on the cheek. He gently asked, “Do you want to learn to fight, Sonny?”
“What do you mean, Uncle Zack?” Sonny replied, puzzled.
“Have you seen your aunt take on the bad guys? Don’t you think she’s amazing? She learned to fight them off.”
Although Sonny had never witnessed Serenity in a fistfight, he did remember seeing her kick a stranger who tried to grab him. At that moment, he had thought his aunt was the coolest person in the world.
He nodded enthusiastically. “I want to be a fighter like Aunt Ser, Uncle Zack. I want to learn to fight.”
Zachary smiled affectionately. “How about I hire a teacher to train you? But it won’t be easy. You can’t cry when it gets tough.”
“He can take lessons at schools,” Serenity suggested. “There are gyms everywhere.”
Sonny earnestly declared, “I won’t cry, Uncle Zack. I want to be as good as Aunt Ser.”
Zachary smiled again. “Okay. I’ll find you a teacher for one-on-one sessions. The lessons won’t interfere with your school in September.”
He then added to Serenity, “The gyms are great for a solid workout, but it’ll take a while before he reaches your level. You have the skills to take down thugs, but you’re no match for the real professionals.”
