Chapter 1146
Before long, Camryn heard someone running toward her.
From the sound of the footsteps, it seemed to be a woman.
“Ms. Newman.”
Camryn recognized the familiar voice as Serenity’s.
“Ms. Newman.”
Serenity hurried over to Camryn, bent down, and reached out her hand to hold Camryn’s. “Ms. Newman, are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” Camryn replied.
Indeed, it was Serenity.
Deep down, Camryn believed that what the bodyguard had said was inaccurate. If the bookstore were around a thousand feet away, Serenity wouldn’t have noticed her arrival so quickly.
Serenity’s bookstore must be located nearby.
Jasmine helped pick up Camryn’s white cane and the gifts, which included two boxes of dietary supplements and two sets of skincare products.
Rather than asking Camryn why she had come, Serenity and Jasmine first assisted her into the bookstore. Once Camryn was seated, Serenity glanced at the gifts and asked, “Did Mrs. Newman send you here to plead for Carrie?”
“Mm,” Camryn hummed softly in response.
Jasmine poured a glass of warm water and handed it to Camryn, who accepted it with a thank you.
“This is my best friend, Jasmine,” Serenity introduced Jasmine to Camryn.
Camryn oriented herself based on where Jasmine had handed her the water. She turned toward Jasmine and greeted her with a smile, “Ms. Sox.”
Jasmine’s eyes lingered on Camryn’s beautiful face, lamenting that such a lovely girl was blind.
After Camryn took a few sips of water, Serenity said casually, “So Mrs. Newman wanted you to come plead for Carrie, huh? Why didn’t she come herself?”
“Mr. Zachary forbade them from disturbing you. They went to York Corporation but couldn’t meet with Mr. Zachary.”
Camryn did not conceal her feelings. There was no need to assist her family in hiding the truth.
“She claimed I was the cause of the incident, so I have to make amends. Mrs. York, I truly was the cause. I dragged you into this mess, and I’m sincerely sorry.”
Camryn appeared remorseful as she faced Serenity.
Since Camryn always wore sunglasses, Serenity couldn’t see her eyes. Being visually impaired, Camryn had little to reveal through her gaze. When Serenity first met her, Camryn had removed her glasses; her large eyes were striking yet vacant.
“It wasn’t your fault. I interfered because I couldn’t tolerate the situation. I don’t regret my actions, and I will accept whatever consequences arise.”
Serenity replied gently, “Ms. Newman, you shouldn’t feel guilty. In this matter, none of us are to blame. Carrie is the one at fault for being cruel and reckless. Although you have different fathers, you are both half-siblings through your mother. It’s unacceptable how she treated you… I couldn’t stand by as an outsider.”
Camryn’s expression showed no sadness. She remained indifferent, likely because she had been hurt so deeply that she had grown numb.
She was no longer the same Camryn from ten years ago.
“What did she want you to tell me?”
Camryn replied softly, “She asked me to request that you don’t press charges against her beloved daughter.”
Serenity scoffed. “Why should I let Carrie off the hook? Someone like her won’t learn from her mistakes or even acknowledge them.”
Camryn paused for a moment, then set down her glass of warm water. She retrieved a bank card from her trouser pocket and placed it in front of Serenity. “Mrs. York, my uncle asked me to give this to you. He has changed the card’s PIN to 123456. The balance on the card is…
“Intended to compensate for both your car and mental distress.” Serenity returned the card to Camryn’s hand and stated flatly, “Tell your uncle I prefer a new car as compensation instead of cash. Regarding the mental distress compensation, I will certainly pursue it when I file charges against Carrie. The court will back me in requesting whatever amount I seek from them.”
