Callum retrieved a business card from a small box on the counter and handed it to Camryn. He took a moment to examine the card before slipping it into his pants pocket. Then, he picked up his pot of cactus.
“I’ll be leaving now,” he said.
“Have a nice day, sir,” Camryn replied as she followed him outside. Callum glanced back at her twice but didn’t say anything. He walked to his car parked nearby and soon drove away.
As soon as Callum left, Camryn’s two shop assistants arrived. Together with Camryn, they moved out some potted flowers and arranged them.
“Why is this cactus here?” one of the shop assistants asked, noticing the cactus on the counter as she picked up the pot and returned it to its designated spot.
“A gentleman came earlier to buy a cactus,” Camryn explained. “He mentioned wanting to put it on his desk, but that one was too large, so he chose a smaller one instead.”
Camryn chose not to reveal that Callum was testing her. He hadn’t come to buy flowers; he had only purchased a small pot of cactus as part of his assessment. Who was he? It seemed he was pursuing her, though she was confident she had never met him before. He displayed a certain meanness, especially since she had been pricked by the cactus thorns because of him.
The shop assistant hummed in response, and Camryn remained silent. She settled back at the register, leaving the cleaning and watering of the flowers to her assistants.
Meanwhile, Callum returned to York Corporation after leaving the flower shop. He stepped out of his car with the small pot of cactus in one hand and entered the office building.
Zachary had also just arrived. He had sent his wife to the bookstore first, which caused him to arrive at the office a bit later than usual.
“Zachary,” Callum called to him.
