The thug decided to heed Serenity’s advice and called Carrie.
Serenity instructed the bodyguards to support him during the call. The thug struggled to catch his breath while simultaneously prostrating himself and speaking.
When the call came in, Carrie’s mother urged her to contact the thugs. Excitedly, Carrie exclaimed to her mother, “They’re calling, Mom! They’re calling! I bet they’ve finished the job.”
She answered the call with anticipation.
“Ms. Jones, we vandalized the woman’s car and assaulted her. She’s knocked out cold but still alive. She’s not dead. Hurry up and make the final payment. We want to leave Wiltspoon now.”
“It’s good that you didn’t kill her. Send me a photo. I need proof that you completed the task before I can pay you.”
“We really did a number on her. We left the scene quickly since she was bleeding. How could we possibly have stayed for a photo? Please hurry and pay us. We need to get out of here.”
“Are you certain you got the right woman?” Carrie felt no fear upon hearing that Serenity was beaten and unconscious; instead, she felt a thrill. She finally had her revenge.
Serenity should have stayed out of her affairs. How dare Serenity get in her way! Carrie’s father even had to apologize to Mr. York.
“Yes, absolutely. She owns a bookstore at the entrance of Wiltspoon School and drives a national car. We followed her from the bookstore. There’s no way we got the wrong person.”
“That’s her, for sure. Alright, I’ll wire the money to you. Take the payment and leave Wiltspoon immediately. Delete my number, and don’t share a word with anyone. Otherwise, I won’t be able to help you.”
“But what if you’re scamming me since you didn’t take a picture? I’ll pay half the amount now and the rest once I’m sure the woman is beaten up tomorrow.”
“Can you transfer the money directly?”
“Are you serious? We’ve committed a crime, and you’re holding half the payment now.”
The thug would have unleashed his anger on Carrie if Serenity hadn’t stared him down, preventing him from saying anything further. He felt an overwhelming urge to crawl through the radio waves and strangle Carrie.
“I have the money and I keep my promises. I’ll pay the remaining amount once I receive confirmation tomorrow. In fact, I’ll even give you a tip,” Carrie replied.
After hanging up, she went online to transfer the funds.
Once the thugs received the money, Serenity signaled the bodyguards to take the thug’s phone. They added his contact information and used his phone to send the voice recording to one of their own devices.
“The police will arrive shortly. You should confess your crimes now,” Serenity stated.
The thugs were left speechless, tempted to lash out at Ms. Jones.
As the bodyguard played the voice recording, Serenity listened closely and realized it wasn’t Ms. Jones at all; it was Carrie. Her deduction had been correct—Ms. Jones was a pseudonym Carrie used.
“Seren!” Zachary rushed in.
Police from the nearby station were also on their way, following closely behind Zachary’s vehicle.
“Are you alright, Seren?” he asked, having ditched his clients after receiving a call from the bodyguard.
Zachary stepped out of the car and hurried towards Serenity, placing his hands on her shoulders as he scanned her body for any signs of harm. Aside from a few stray strands of hair, Serenity appeared fine, and he sighed in relief.
