Royal Furline Betrayed BY Mark Twain 9
Chapter 9
Aelfric looked utterly baffled. “Gigi-my sister. Didn’t you get the invite?”
By the time my engagement party was wrapping up, Aelfric came over, brows furrowed.
“That’s weird,” he muttered. “The second Bainbridge heard you were getting engaged, he lost it.
“Gigi, you didn’t tell him?”
My stomach twisted. I quickly changed the subject.
Before the party, Aelfric had insisted we invite Bainbridge.
“He and I go way back,” he’d said. “And these past years in Houston, he looked out for you. It’s only right that we invite him.
I’d nodded agreeably-then quietly pocketed the invitation myself.
Later, I told Aelfric that Bainbridge was too busy to come.
A man who’d treated me with such cold cruelty didn’t deserve a seat at my engagement.
I’d assumed that once I left Houston, he’d finally clear whatever obstacles stood between him and Evelynn and claim the life he really
wanted.
I thought the only thread left between us was my thirst for revenge.

Chapter 9
I never expected him to haunt my engagement party like a ghost from the past.
What a godawful stroke of luck.
I was stewing in irritation when a single wrapped candy appeared under my nose.
Matthew wiggled it playfully. “It’s a beautiful day. You’ve got to have something sweet.”
I couldn’t help laughing. “All right, Mr. Fiancé.”
Shortly after, the party wound down.
After waving off the last guests and family, Matthew and I lingered, curled up together, reminiscing about old times and dreaming out loud about the future.
As the night deepened, Matthew held me tightly, reluctant to let go. “Let’s get married soon, then we won’t have to say goodbye anymore. Come on, I’ll drive you home.”
I looked into his soft, pleading eyes and ruffled his hair, whispering against his ear, “Soon.”
Matthew took the wheel, heading toward my parents’ place.
A light rain fell from the sky, damp and soft.
The surrounding trees shimmered faintly under the moonlight.
At a red light, my phone buzzed. It was Aelfric.
“Hurry up, Matt,” I teased, checking the caller ID. “The big brother is already checking the clock.”

દ
“Yes, Ms. Ortiz,” he said with a smile.
I answered the call. “Relax, Rick. We’re almost there.”
Aelfric’s voice was puzzled. “Gigi, has Bain called you?”
Hearing that name twice in one day felt like an omen.
My smile faded. “No. Why?”
I was about to tell him to never mention that man again, but Aelfric cut me off.
“That’s odd. He just drove all the way here from Houston. When he found out you weren’t home, he asked for the engagement venue address and immediately left again.
“He looked rough, and he drove way too fast. I’m actually a little worried.”
Then, he teased. “You two must’ve gotten pretty close these past few years. He seemed desperate to congratulate you in person.”
