Chapter 7

“Not today,” I said quickly. “Let’s skip it.”

Aelfric frowned, puzzled. “Why not?”

I touched the edge of my mask self-consciously. “I just had some cosmetic work done-my face is still swollen. I’d rather not scare him off before he even gets a chance to see the real me. I don’t want him backing out of this marriage you’ve so carefully curated.”

Aelfric didn’t know much about “girl stuff,” so he waved it off reassuringly. “Come on, what are you worried about? Everyone in New York knows you’re stunning. Besides, he’s not the type to…”

Before he could finish, my “match” noticed our hesitation and began walking toward us.

Panic surged. I darted forward, grabbed Aelfric’s hand, and pleaded in a low voice, “Rick, please.”

Aelfric stopped mid-sentence. He let out a long, defeated sigh and nodded. “Fine. You win.”

Then, he turned and walked toward the man alone.

They stopped at a distance and spoke quietly for a few moments.

As Aelfric talked, the man kept glancing in my direction.

I could only offer a stiff, awkward nod and a fake smile hidden behind my mask.

Chapter 7

When I finally saw him nod in understanding and turn away, I let out the breath I’d been holding.

When we got home, my parents were thrilled when they saw me.

I spun the same story about cosmetic recovery.

They fussed endlessly and immediately arranged all kinds of supplements and comfort food for me.

From morning till night, the kitchen never rested.

The maid and my parents took shifts pampering me, and, in just a few days, I’d gained several very happy pounds.

Finally, I begged, “Can you please stop feeding me? I’m going to burst!”

My mom smiled indulgently

“Perfect timing, actually. Rick says Matt’s coming to pick you up today. You two can go for a walk and work off some of that food.”

I blinked. “Matt who?”

“Matthew Ford, silly. Our old neighbors’ boy-don’t tell me you’ve forgotten him.”

Matthew?

I rummaged through childhood memories. “Mr. Ford’s son… the chubby little kid?”

My mom burst out laughing. “He’s not chubby anymore. He’s 1.87 meters and gorgeous now. Oh-Rick mentioned he was at the airport with him the day you landed. Didn’t you see him?”

Suddenly, I remembered the man who’d waved at me from afar that day.

So that was Matthew-the same little shadow who used to trail after me everywhere I went.

Almost immediately, a WhatsApp friend request popped up from him.

After I accepted, he messaged instantly, “Beautiful day—want to go for a walk?”

I actually laughed out loud at the screen.

Could a pickup line be more adorably old-school?

By the time I finished my makeup and headed downstairs, Matthew was already seated across from my mother.

They were chatting happily, and my mother was beaming.

Clearly, she was already sold on my prospective fiancé.

I cleared my throat, breaking their rapport.

My mom waved me over, gesturing proudly at the small mountain of gift boxes on the coffee table. “Look at all this! Matt brought these for you and for us.”

I stared, stunned.

From the logos alone, I could tell there were designer bags, jewelry, high-end skincare, wellness supplements, cases of fine wine, and artisanal coffee.

If I didn’t know better, I’d think he’d come to formally propose right then and there.

Chapter 7

My mind drifted, unbidden, to Bainbridge.

I’d begged him countless times to come with me, to finally go public with my parents.

Every time, he refused.

And yet, every holiday, he would still send gifts to my parents-always under the guise of being Aelfric’s friend.
