I’ve never been a morning person but today, today I was so looking forward to waking up. I barely slept. There’s just something about relocating. It’s peaceful and good for one’s mind. Johannesburg is a busy place, I hate it for that but at some point, I’m glad I’m here. This place if full of opportunities for youth, so they say. Here I am standing at my new school gate before I could enter the premises. My mother just dropped me off. I’m still trying to accept this, it’s a beautiful school, I’m loving it.
From the gate, I walked to the principal’s office for my time table and for my new class. I remember where we went on last week when I came to register at this school. I didn’t get lost, at least I have a good memory. I knocked.
“Come in” I opened the door and went inside closing it behind me.
Naomi : Good morning Mrs Jones
Mrs Jones : Good morning Naomi. I take it you’re here for your new class and your timetable.
Naomi : yes ma’am
Mrs Jones : Which stream did you choose?
Naomi : Science stream
Mrs Jones : okay it’s Mathematics, Physical sciences,Life sciences. Geography or Agricultural Sciences?
Naomi : Agricultural Sciences
Mrs Jones : well you’re in 11B. The 11A is for Geography. Here’s your timetable,and textbooks,I prepared them for you lastweek. You got your stationary right?
Naomi : yes ma’am.
Mrs Jones : Good. The 11B has 40 desks and 35 children. Choose any desk you want for yourself. Lets go,let me show you your class. Don’t allow any sort of bullying please report it as soon as you experience that or see it. This is your ‘school code of conduct’ document please read it through and sign this form and bring it over by Friday. It’s too big I know plus your homeworks but try to read it through so that I can have the form immediately. Oh and cellphones are allowed at our school but we don’t use them during school lessons because we’ll take them and you’ll get it the following week. Nobody is allowed to leave the school premises until 3pm,they used to leave for the shops but now they’re available inside this school. Oh this is the school map by the way,and your diary. We don’t want you getting lost now,do we? Oh and there are also sports. There’s tennis, basketball,soccer,hockey,netball and ladies’ soccer,we also have a cheerleading team. Would you like to join?
This lady can talk haaa!
Naomi :uhm… I’d like to join tennis.
Mrs Jones : good choice,see me before the end of the day, I’ll give you your equipment. You just need to have sneakers,white sneakers. You’ll get your tennis school kit when you come to the office. Your size?
Naomi : 32 for the skirt and small for the t-shirt.
Mrs Jones : I’ll fix it for you. You can wear your own clothes for practice though,the uniform is for special occasion. Got it?
Naomi : yes ma’am
She smiled at me and stopped walking.
Mrs Jones : this is classroom 60. Your classroom,11B. Enjoy your first day at school Ms Sebothoma.
Why does my surname sound so weird when she says it? I just smiled at her and went inside the class. 5 minutes before the lessons starts so I sit down at the front desk waiting for my classmates to arrive,as well as the teacher. I placed the plastic with textbooks on top of the desk and the rest of the staff in my bag. Seems like i have a load to Carry back home today. I sighed at that thought but got relieved when I remembered that I’m nolonger at Durban so I’m not going to walk back home. The school bell rings and children starts to come in class. The teacher follows and just like that… The day starts.
