I Cancel the Engagement and Level Way Up 92

Chapter 92

Vivian admitted it. She had chosen Logan, and it had taken her seven years to see what he really was. That decision had been stupid.

“Maybe I was stupid, but at least I was brave,” she shot back. “That’s still better than

someone who hides in the dark, too scared to love the woman he loves. That kind of cowardice is worse.”

Kingston’s face darkened as he stared at her. It felt like the temperature around them dropped a few degrees.

Vivian knew she had hit a nerve.

For a moment, a chill ran through her. She had the feeling he might lunge at her and strangle her.

They locked eyes.

In a standoff like this, one of them was bound to back down.

Truthfully, she was rattled. Still, she didn’t want to back down.

In the end, Kingston looked away first. He turned and walked toward the end of the hallway.

Vivian pressed her lips together. Watching his lonely back, she didn’t feel any triumph at all.

She stood there quietly, guilt creeping into her expression as she seriously reflected on herself.

Had she gone too far?

Vivian knew that heirs from wealthy families carried generations of effort and sacrifice on their shoulders. They enjoyed the family’s status and comfort, but they always had to pay a price for it.

Love was the part they needed the least.

They were bound to make choices they couldn’t control.

People were emotional by nature, after all. To suppress his feelings for so many years took remarkable self–control. Compared with her reckless courage, that kind of restraint might actually have been the greater strength.

Vivian pressed her lips together, pushed down the tightness in her chest, and walked down the hallway.

When she reached her door, she sighed and lightly bumped her forehead against it, trying to empty her mind a little. Then, she entered the code, ready to go inside.

Across from her, the door that had already closed opened again.

Vivian turned and looked at the man standing there.

He wasn’t still angry and coming out to hit her, was he?

She tightened her grip on the doorknob, ready to slip into her room at any second.

Kingston’s dark eyes stayed on her. His voice was low and heavy, as though it carried the weight of the night.

“I hope you stay that brave forever.”

He tossed out the words and slammed the door shut.

Vivian stood there, momentarily at a loss. For a moment, she couldn’t tell whether Kingston had meant it as a sincere wish or another jab.

After all, what he’d meant earlier was that being brave was the same as being stupid.

So, he wanted her to stay stupid forever?

The one time she’d been brave, she’d ended up with a jerk.

Did he mean he hoped she’d stay stupid enough to keep running into jerks?

How vicious he was.

She knew it. His words always came with barbs hidden inside.

Vivian felt emotionally battered.

She stared at the tightly closed door across from her and clenched her teeth in frustration.

She couldn’t outtalk him. And she sure as hell couldn’t outfight him.

She’d had enough of this kind of frustration.

All she had done was call off the engagement with Kingston, yet he kept coming at her with personal attacks.

She admitted it. Being too brave didn’t seem like such a good thing anymore.

Vivian took several deep breaths until she finally calmed down. Then, she opened her door and went inside.

After she shut the door, Vivian threw herself onto the bed, exhausted in both body and mind.

Just then, a new message popped up on her phone.

She unlocked the screen and tapped it. It was a video sent by someone under Victor.

Just looking at the thumbnail made her nauseous. She didn’t dare imagine what the full video would be like.
