I Cancel the Engagement and Level Way Up 87
Chapter 87
Vivian felt she needed to make it clear to Kingston that she wasn’t the kind of woman who would try to seduce an ex–fiance she had once chosen to walk away from.
She wouldn’t do something that reckless.
“Mr. Howard, a joke is a joke. My taste in men may be bad, but my character is not,” Vivian said. “I’m not going to cling to you just because I went through a failed relationship, so you
can relax.”
He didn’t need to keep “joking” like this just to warn her off.
She looked up at his face, her expression turning serious.
Kingston narrowed his eyes. The easy elegance about him drained away, replaced by a cold,
sharp edge.
“Ms. Hartwell, your taste isn’t just bad,” he said. “You were blind.”
Vivian didn’t bother figuring out where his anger was coming from. She was hurt to be personally attacked again.
That was really too much.
She pressed her lips together, not sure how to argue back, her cheeks puffing slightly.
Kingston glanced down at her, then turned and walked toward the hotel entrance.
Vivian followed at an even pace, still thinking about how to get back on him.
Then, Kingston suddenly turned around, hooked an arm around her, and yanked her into his chest, pinning her against a pillar in the center of the hotel.
Vivian jumped at the sudden move. She stared at his face, so close it took her breath away, her mind blanking out.
“What-”
She barely got the word out before Kingston lifted a hand and covered her mouth.
He leaned down, his warm lips brushing her skin as his breath drifted slowly along her cheek.
The closeness was so intimate it made Vivian’s fingertips tremble.
She held her breath, stiff with shock, as someone walked past them.

As he passed, he let out a teasing whistle. “Man, you’re really going for it. You can’t even wait until you’re out of the lobby?”
Vivian’s expression shifted. She recognized the voice at once.
Her face darkened. The hand pressed to Kingston’s chest didn’t push anymore. It only curled into a tight fist with anger.
Zane laughed as he headed into the elevator. Clearly, Victor still hadn’t confronted him.
Everything Zane had carefully set up tonight was going to boomerang back onto him.
It would hit harder than he’d ever imagined.
Victor wasn’t going to let him off that easily.
“Do you like this position?” Kingston’s cool, low voice sounded above her head.
Vivian jolted and snapped out of it. Only then did she realize she was gripping Kingston’s shirt collar tightly.
She let go at once and gave an awkward smile. “Sorry.”
Kingston glanced at the mess she’d made of his collar.
Vivian immediately lifted a hand and tried to straighten it for him.
Kingston didn’t move. He stayed in the same posture, standing close, watching her from
above.
When she finished, Vivian lifted her head. Her lips brushed his as he leaned down, and the illusion of their breaths tangling made the already heated atmosphere even more intimate.
Vivian froze.
Now, she really couldn’t explain this.
Kingston’s breathing hitched, and his body reacted on its own.
His eyes darkened. He turned away and strode toward the exit.
He walked fast, almost like he was afraid she’d latch onto him.
Vivian stared at his tall back, stunned in place.
All she’d done was wrinkle his collar and accidentally brush his lips. Did he really need to get that angry?

TOCILTE

She thought about it and realized maybe he did.
She’d seen plenty of business coverage about Kingston. No matter where he appeared, he was always immaculate, perfectly put together.
But she’d messed up his appearance again and again.
Maybe she’d stepped right on his biggest trigger.
She had only just sworn she had no improper intentions, yet she accidentally kissed him soon after.
It was hard to explain that it was really just an “accident“.
