I Cancel the Engagement and Level Way Up 80

Chapter 80

Vivian said, “Not yet. I’ve only managed to gather half so far.”

The hand resting on the steering wheel tightened slightly as her mind raced. She was quickly piecing together how she would deal with whatever came next.

The furious outburst she had anticipated never came. Instead, the person on the other end fell silent for a brief moment. When the person spoke again, their tone carried a hint of mockery and disdain.

They said, “Ms. Hartwell, an entire day has passed, and you still couldn’t come up with three million dollars? It looks like you aren’t as capable as the rumors claim.”

Vivian pursed her lips. “You know I haven’t been involved in the company for half a year. During this time, Logan barely gave me any dividends. I don’t have that much cash on hand.”

The person let out a scornful chuckle. Vivian said nothing. After a few seconds, the person spoke again, his voice low. “You still have an hour left. Remember what I said. Only you are allowed to come to Maplewood Club. If anyone else learns about this, I’ll release everything tomorrow.”

Vivian quickly responded, “Don’t worry. I haven’t told anyone. It’s just that the time you gave me is too short. I really couldn’t scrape together three million dollars. How about…”

The other party cut her off with a sneer, not forgetting to belittle her one last time. “I didn’t expect you to be this incompetent. Bring the one and a half million dollars you have and come

over now.”

With that, the person ended the call. Vivian let out a breath. Then, she tapped on Logan’s contact and gave him a call.

They were supposed to get married the next day. Over the past few days, he had been trying hard to win back her forgiveness. He showed up almost every day and hovered around her. Yet

today, aside from a single message in the afternoon saying where he was, he hadn’t contacted her again.

It was unusually quiet. She didn’t believe he would actually listen to her so obediently. If she told him not to come, he would usually come.

Vivian called Logan twice in a row. When there was still no answer, she stopped trying and dialed Jack’s number instead. The call was picked up quickly. The background on his end was noisy.

Jack greeted, “Ms. Hartwell.”

Vivian got straight to the point. “Where is Logan? Think carefully before you answer. Decide whether you really want to help him lie to me.”

There was a brief pause. Then, Jack lowered his voice and said, “Mr. Mercer and the others organized a stag party for Mr. Whitfield. He’s drinking at a club right now. A few women are keeping him company. Do you want me to ask him to take your call?”

Since Jack was planning to resign anyway, he decided to lay everything out without holding back. Vivian’s expression turned indifferent as she said in a low voice, “Don’t tell him I called.”

Jack replied, “Understood.”

Before ending the call, Vivian added one more thing. “Jack, you’ve worked under me for six years. You should know my temperament. I’m giving you a chance to make amends. Don’t waste it.”

THE

Naturally, Jack didn’t refuse. Ever since the last time he went to the villa to retrieve Logan’s suit, he had already sensed that Vivian knew everything Logan had done. Her unusual behavior lately only confirmed his suspicions.

After a brief exchange, Vivian ended the call. Maplewood Club was a leisure clubhouse located in the suburbs.

It operated on a strict membership system. No non–members were allowed inside. Even though it rarely saw many guests, it had managed to stay in business for years.

Vivian parked her car in the Maplewood Club parking area. The parking area was filled with business luxury cars of similar models and colors. There was a van in one corner that looked completely out of place among them.

Her gaze darkened. She walked toward the back of the car and opened the trunk to grab the bag of cash. The moment she stepped into the lobby, she was met with a massive carving covering

an entire wall.

The carving was vulgar and explicit. There were figures entwined in lifelike detail. Under the dim yellow lighting, the scene looked even more suggestive and obscene. Vivian glanced at it once and immediately looked away.
