Chapter 2

At noon the next day, Ophelia came to see me.

Dressed head-to-toe in designer labels, she exuded the arrogance of old money.

Two bodyguards followed behind her, one carrying an insulated container.

“You look rather well, Ms. Sherwood,” Ophelia said, approaching the bedside.

She removed her sunglasses, revealing eyes full of mockery.

“I heard you threw a glass at Nick yesterday. Quite the temper.”

She gestured, and the bodyguard placed the container on the table.

“I had this nourishing soup specially prepared for you. After all, what you lost was Nick’s child,

too.

“Even if it was a mistakemington tamis J. ALES PECCION 2

This book had been added on your bookshelf.

My fingers clenched the sheets, nails digging into my palms.

This was pure humiliation.

“I don’t want your fake sympathy!”

Ophelia let out a light, mocking laugh.

“Ms. Sherwood, you need to understand your position.

“I am Dominic’s lawful wife, the lady of the Pennington family.

“You are merely a plaything.

“Nick kept you around because your innocent look amused him for a while.

“Did you actually believe you

could climb your way into high society?”

She was right. I had been his plaything.

But I never wanted to replace her.

I met her gaze defiantly.

My stare seemed to irritate her.

“What? You thought getting pregnant would force him to choose you over me?

“Nick may want an heir, but he would never jeopardize his relationship with the Caldwell family for a child.

“Certainly not for some bastard that would upset his real wife.”

Then, she pulled a document from her purse and flung it at me.

The sharp edge of the paper sliced my cheek, drawing a bead of blood.

“Your termination notice.”

My eyes widened. Ignoring the sting on my face, I picked up the document with trembling hands.

It was from the design firm where I had worked for less than six months-the place where my career was supposed to begin.

Stamped across it in red was “Terminated”.

The grounds for termination were: “Unbecoming conduct that has severely damaged the firm’s reputation.”

“You…” I was shaking with rage.

“How dare you? That was my job!”

Ophelia examined her freshly manicured nails with indifference.

“You still don’t realize, do you? The Pennington family is the major investor in that company.

“As Nick’s wife, I decide who stays and who goes.

“Nick gave you that money out of respect for your history together.

“Personally, I am not so forgiving.

“Take the money and leave New York. Otherwise, I can promise you’ll regret much more than losing a baby.”

A sinister smile played on her lips. “You have a grandma in a care home, right? The elderly are so fragile, aren’t they? It would be a shame if something disturbed her peace.”

My head snapped up, my eyes blazing with fury.

“Ophelia! If you harm my grandmother, I swear I’ll kill you!”

Ophelia gave a dismissive clap of her hands.

“Well, that’s up to you now, isn’t it?

“Do drink the soup. I’d hate for my consideration to go unappreciated.”

With that, she swept out of the room.

My eyes fell on the insulated container. A wave of nausea hit me so violently that I fled into the bathroom, retching until there was nothing left inside.
