James called again.
I answered. His voice held a surprising heaviness of grief:
“Luna, it’s not what you think. Believe me.”
“Emily just wanted to document her life. She didn’t expect some account to repost it.”
“Let’s not let the internet affect us, Luna. I don’t want a divorce. Can we talk?”
“Where are you? I miss you. I’ll come find you.”
I sighed. “James, you won’t find me.”
“What do you mean?”
“The company is expanding to the West Coast. I applied for a transfer.”
“…”
“The divorce papers are on the coffee table. If there’s no issue, sign them. Let’s not make it ugly.”
“I won’t sign!”
James suddenly became petulant, repeating:
“Luna, you still love me. You’re just upset, right?”
“I’ll keep my distance from Emily from now on. I won’t do things you don’t like.”
“I know I was wrong. Can’t we go back to how we were before?”
I shook my head. “No.”
“Please, Luna…” James’s voice choked up. “For the baby’s sake…”
A breeze blew. I felt a chill on my face and realized I was crying.
But my voice remained firm:
“There is no baby, James. I ended the pregnancy the day you let Emily wear my ring.”
