Scarlet stayed with Emily in the room for a while and quietly left after she fell asleep.
Arthur, Justine, and Julian were all sitting in the living room. William wasn’t there, having disappeared somewhere else.
“What did the doctor say?” Arthur asked.
Julian frowned. He had just spoken with the people responsible for Emily’s care at Mount Plato.
“Grandma had a relapse recently and underwent surgery. She hid it from us. The doctor says that in the best–case scenario, her current condition might sustain her for another six months,” he said.
So, in the worst–case scenario.
Justine was deeply troubled. “We can’t keep William and Scarlet’s situation from her forever.”
Julian was silent for a moment before saying, “I just called off my engagement, and now William is getting divorced. Everything’s bad news. Telling her will only affect her mood.”
Arthur rarely smoked at home, but now he lit a cigarette, sitting there silently with a grave expression.
When they heard Scarlet’s footsteps, they all looked over.
“Is Grandma asleep?” Julian asked.
Scarlet replied, “She’s been asleep for a while.”
The deep furrow in Arthur’s brow never loosened. Only after finishing a cigarette did he finally speak.
“Mom’s current physical condition can’t handle any more shocks. Wait until she’s a bit better, and then we can bring up the matter between you and William.
“Her health is the top priority. Everything else can wait. There’s no rush.”
Scarlet nodded. “I understand.”
Justine rested her head in her hands, frowning. Still, there was nothing she could do now except let out a sigh.
“Dad, Mom, you should turn in for the night,” Julian advised.
After Arthur and Justine returned to their room, only Scarlet and Julian remained in the living room.
Julian also looked weary as he gave Scarlet an apologetic look. “Scarlet, I’m afraid you’re going to have to put up with a little more for a while.”
Scarlet didn’t say anything. She also couldn’t predict how Emily would react to the truth. Like them, she didn’t dare take that risk
She even found herself desperately wondering if her split from William had somehow disrupted some mystical force, causing Emily’s illness to flare up again.
Because when she thought about it, the timing actually matched.
After a pause, she asked, “Julian, why did you call off your engagement with Ms. Bauer?”
“There wasn’t any particular reason,” Julian replied. “We each had our own goals.”
“Oh.”
“Get some rest early.” After saying this, Julian went upstairs first.
Compared to the Jamesons, the Bauer family of Northcrest and the Coopers were truly well–matched in terms of social

status. Their alliance was a powerful combination.

Julian and Sabrina Bauer’s engagement came after Scarlet’s marriage to William, meaning it had been over two years since. They had never married, and no one expected it to get called off.
From the start, it was purely a political alliance–about family background and influence, never about feelings. Yet for some reason, it ended up canceled.
Scarlet stood there thinking for a while but came to no conclusions. Besides, it had nothing to do with her.
She turned to go back to her room and saw William standing at the balcony door. She didn’t know how long he had been there, but it seemed to be quite a while.
He must have stepped out, his coat still carrying the chill from outside. His brown eyes met hers with an indifferent gaze, making it look darker than the night itself.
