William this, William that. Who was Nicole trying to impress by saying it in front of Scarlet?
At Emily’s age, she had been around the block for decades. Who did Nicole think she was fooling with that performance?
“Tonight is our family dinner. When family members are conversing, outsiders shouldn’t be present,” Emily stated directly. “Have a car take her home! And give her some of my fish oil supplements, so people don’t say the Coopers lack manners.”
It was painfully obvious who was the one lacking manners. This was a family dinner, so what was an outsider like Nicole doing forcing her way in? Perhaps she should take some supplements to help enhance her thinking.
Nicole had never experienced such humiliation in her life. Feeling utterly embarrassed, she instinctively cast a pleading look toward William.
“It’s useless to look at me,” William said, keeping his hands in his pockets as if it had nothing to do with him. “There isn’t a single person in this house I can afford to offend right now. Even a stray dog can take a shot at me.”
That rendered everyone speechless.
In the end, it was Justine who personally saw Nicole out while offering a few words of comfort.
“Emily’s just like that. I’ve suffered plenty from her temper, too. It’s not aimed at you. She’s not in good health and doesn’t know about William and Scarlet yet. You really shouldn’t have come at this time.”
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Cooper. I didn’t think it through. I just thought it had been so long since I saw Mrs. Cooper Senior. I didn’t realize she still dislikes me so much.”
No matter how unhappy Nicole felt inside, she still had to put on the air of a gracious young lady. She smiled ruefully and said, “I’m not like Scarlet. She’s always known how to win Mrs. Cooper Senior’s affection since she was little.”
Scarlet planned to talk things through with Emily once dinner was over.
Emily didn’t know the full story. If Nicole got upset again, Scarlet would be the one held responsible, as always.
She had already carried enough blame.
At the dinner table, Justine served Emily some food.
Emily’s appetite was poor, but she didn’t show it in front of them. She tasted a tender fish dish and nodded in appreciation. ‘ This fish is good. Give some to Scarlet as well.”
And so, Justine gave some to Scarlet as well.
Scarlet politely said, “Thank you, Mrs. Cooper.”
Emily caught it immediately. “Why are you calling her ‘Mrs. Cooper‘?”
Everyone at the table paused, their expressions shifting.
Emily looked from one person to another, displeased. “What’s with all the looks?”
Justine set down her utensils, ready to tell the truth. “Emily, actually, William and Scarlet are-”
Emily suddenly started coughing very badly. Scarlet immediately got up and went over, gently patting her back.
After coughing for a while, she finally recovered. However, it was as if all her strength had been exhausted by the coughing fit, leaving her visibly weakened.

When even eating became a struggle, it was a sign that death was already at the door.
Scarlet’s eyes instantly reddened. “Please don’t say that! Let’s eat slowly. I’ll get you some soup, okay?”
Emily couldn’t even drink a single sip.

The atmosphere in the dining room grew heavy. After a moment, Arthur said solemnly, “Take Mom back to her room to rest first”
They then helped Emily back to her room.
Emily held Scarlet’s hand and said, “Stay here tonight and keep me company. I’ve already had them tidy up your room with
William.”
Scarlet leaned over the bed, resting her cheek against Emily’s frail hand, and nodded. “I’ll stay with you.” There were so few people in this world who truly cared about Scarlet, after all.
