Once Scarlet got into the car, Emily reached out, gently cupping her face in her hands. Her skin was lined with soft wrinkles of age and love “You’ve lost weight again. Have you not been eating properly?”
Scarlet answered obediently, “I have been eating I actually gained two pounds recently. You’re the one who’s lost so much weight What happened?”
Emily’s health had never been good. She’d had stomach cancer and gone through several surgeries. Once a plump, well–fed old lady, she’d wasted away by half. Three years ago, she’d even come close to death itself.
Scarlet didn’t know if it was some kind of magic Emily had consulted or just luck, but somehow, after she married William, Emily had pulled through that ordeal.
For the past few years, she’d been living on Mount Plato, spending her days in devout meditation while nursing her health. She rarely allowed her children or grandchildren to visit, saying it disturbed her peace. She only came back during the New Year, and even then, just for a few days No one knew why she’d returned early this time.
Compared to the last time Scarlet saw her, she was visibly thinner again. For an elderly person, losing weight so drastically always meant Illness.
Looking at her nearly paper–thin frame, Scarlet frowned with worry. “Are you feeling unwell again?”
“It’s nothing,” Emily said cheerfully. “Same old problems. I had another small surgery not long ago.”
She said it lightly, but Scarlet, with her medical background, knew very well that with Emily’s condition, any surgery was a gamble with death “Why didn’t you tell us you were having surgery?”
“If I told you, you’d just worry yourselves sick,” Emily said. “I’m always having little aches and pains. Are you all supposed to stop living your lives because of me?”
At her age, she’d long since come to terms with life and death. “It’s better to tell you after it’s done. If it goes well, you can be happy I pulled through. And if it doesn’t… Well, maybe my time has come.”
“I’d rather worry than regret it later. Regret like that lasts a lifetime.”
Scarlet knew too well what it felt like to lose family. That kind of pain never went away.
Emily was momentarily stunned. Knowing Scarlet had lost her parents young and was especially emotionally attached, she squeezed her hand. “That’s my fault. Next time, I’ll make sure you come and stay with me.”
Then she told the driver, “Let’s go back home for dinner. If we don’t head back soon, the others will start calling nonstop.”
“You haven’t been home yet?” Scarlet asked in surprise.
The driver answered, “The moment Mrs. Cooper Senior got off the plane, she said she wanted to come pick you up. She’s been waiting outside the hospital for two hours.”
“You could’ve gone home first. I could’ve visited you after work.”
Emily huffed in mock indignation. “Why would I go back to stare at those old faces? I’ve seen enough of them to last a lifetime. You’re different. Looking at your stunning face makes me happy.”
Scarlet felt her eyes sting. She didn’t even know what to say. She was in the middle of her divorce, no longer technically part of the Cooper family. The only one she truly cared about now was Emily.
Better to wait until after dinner to tell her. Emily had just come back, and there was no need to ruin a reunion.
When they arrived at the Cooper residence, everyone was already waiting for them. Scarlet helped Emily inside, and everyone in the living room rose in unison to greet them. William and Julian were both there.

William’s gase drifted casually over Scarlet’s face. “Must be nice. Even Grandma has to pick you up personally.”
Arthan said, “William could’ve gone to get her. Why did you go yourself?”
“I can pick her up anytime I like. Since when is that any of your business?”
At heart, she was still a big kid, and all Arthur could do was watch helplessly.
William added casually, “So it’s only her you care about now? Better keep that under wraps, or people will get the wrong idea about the Coopers ”
The moment he finished, three people glared at him all at once.
Justine snapped, “What nonsense are you spouting now?”
