End of the Contract,Start of His Obsession Chapter 76

Scarlet said defiantly, “Why are you afraid? You’re such a tough guy. I’ve been cursing you for ages, but nothing has happened to you.”

She still had medical records to finish, so she turned and walked away.

William snapped, “Get back here!”

He grabbed her arm, his gaze sweeping over her legs. “Where did you hit yourself just now? Get it checked.”

Scarlet pulled her arm free and replied, “You don’t have to worry about me. I’ll get it checked.”

William stared at her retreating back, He felt a surge of inexplicable frustration boiling in his chest, so intense that he ended up letting out an incredulous laugh.

“What a heartless person!”

When he looked away, he realized Xyla was still there. Her wheelchair was parked against the wall, and she was sitting there quietly, trying her best to be invisible. Her eyes were darting back and forth.

William asked, “Why are you still here?”

Xyla’s earlier arrogance vanished in an instant. She hunched her shoulders and said timidly, “I didn’t hear anything. I’m deaf.

Since Xyla had stood up for Scarlet, William didn’t find her presence annoying. He slid his hands into his pockets and cast her a cold glance. “Next time, fight your own battles.”

“Okay,” Xyla mumbled.

Scarlet’s knees were bruised and swollen. It looked serious, but after checking it herself, she figured it wasn’t too bad. Once she wrapped up her work, she went to the orthopedics department for an X–ray.

The results showed no major injuries, though the pronounced swelling and throbbing pain made her walk with small, measured steps.

Scarlet picked up her prescription and began making her way back. As she passed a private room, the door suddenly swung open, and someone stepped out.

Scarlet met Justine and almost called her “Justine“, but the word caught in her throat.

Considering their current relationship, calling her “Mrs. Cooper” seemed more appropriate.

Justine likely knew Scarlet had moved out. Upon hearing the greeting, she simply gave a faint nod.

Seeing Justine carry the hospital–issued water pitcher and showing up at the same time as William, it wasn’t hard to guess they were here to visit someone.

“Are you visiting a patient?” Scarlet asked.

“Nicole injured her leg. I came to check on her.”

“I see.” Scarlet didn’t know that Nicole was hospitalized.

Just then, Nicole called out from the room. “Mrs. Cooper, please don’t trouble yourself! How could I let an elder take care of me? I’d feel terrible. If my mom finds out, she’ll definitely scold me. Hand me the pitcher. I can get the water myself.” Justine turned back and said, “Lie down this instant! Does your injury not hurt anymore?” Though her tone was stern, it was grounded in genuine concern.

It hadn’t occurred to Scarlet that the elegant, pampered Justine was capable of looking after someone, let alone fetching water for them. She had never experienced such warmth and protection.

Justine saw the medicine in Scarlet’s hand and asked with concern, “Are you unwell?”

“It’s nothing, I just hurt my leg. I should get back to work,” Scarlet replied.

When Justine left the hospital, Lester bowed and held the door open. Inside the car, William sat with his legs crossed, his eyes fixed on a tablet as he tracked the stock market.

Lester placed his hand over the top of the door frame as Justine bent down and slid into the car. “Nicole was just asking for you. If you have the time to sit here and stare at the stock market, why couldn’t you be bothered to come upstairs?”

William replied without lifting his gaze, “She’s not a prisoner. And even if she were, her leg is injured. It’s not like she’s going to escape. Do we both need to be standing guard?”

“Your driver hit her, so you’re at fault. Don’t you think you ought to show some concern?”

“The medical bills are paid, the supplements have been delivered, and I’ve personally secured the most prestigious wound care specialist for her. Moreover, you and Dad gave her two sets of antiques as an apology. What else must I do to show my concern?”

He continued sarcastically, “If it’ll make her feel better, why don’t I just cut my knee and get a few stitches? If I do that, remember to ask Mr. Jameson to return the two antiques. My place is looking a bit empty. I could use some decor.”

“I don’t know who taught you to speak so sarcastically. How’s the divorce paperwork with Scarlet coming along?” Justine asked.

“What’s the rush?” William replied.

“Rush? You two have been dragging out this divorce for months and still haven’t finalized it.”

William replied nonchalantly, “Divorce isn’t just having a farewell meal. I’ve so many assets. I need my lawyer to sort everything properly. You’re the one who pushed me to get married back then, and now you’re the one rushing me to end it.”

Justine bristled at the accusation. “It wasn’t my idea to marry you off. It was your grandmother and her meddling.”

“Didn’t you choose to sacrifice me?”

Justine was speechless. William lifted his gaze and flashed a mocking smile. “So you think Julian’s marriage is off–limits, but you don’t mind sacrificing mine?”

Justine replied with a hurtful expression, “That wasn’t what I meant.”

“If that isn’t what you meant, then what was it? It’s always been this way since we were young. Julian is the one who matters the most to you and Dad. He’s the heir to the family business. I don’t deserve to be involved.”

“It’s not like that.” Justine furrowed her brows and sighed. She reached out to take his hand.

“I know it’s my fault for making you marry Scarlet. I know how miserable you’ve been. But now that you’re separating, everything is finally getting back on track. I’ve already spoken with the Jamesons, and they agree for you and Nicole to get together. Just get the divorce paperwork with Scarlet finalized, and then Mrs. Jameson and I will pick a wedding date-”

William scoffed and interrupted, “So you’ve already found my next buyer. I’m a divorcee now. No matter how much the Jamesons want to be part of our family, they wouldn’t be so desperate to rush into marriage before the divorce is finalized.”

He tossed his tablet aside and asked bluntly, “Mrs. Cooper, what did you promise them in return so that they will sell their daughter to us?”

“How could you say that? I know that you and Nicole are childhood sweethearts who grew up together. You’ve spent years making a scene, even chasing her to Amriva. Don’t you want to be with her? I’m just trying to help,” Justine retorted.
