While William could help this time, what about the next?
Being taken for granted, William shot back, “Scarlet, do you always have to be so prickly?”
“I’m not trying to be prickly,” Scarlet retorted. “I just don’t want others to know about us, especially not now.”
William smirked. “Am I some kind of embarrassment? We’ve been married for three years, and you’ve kept it so well that none of your colleagues even know. Scarlet, what were you in your past life? A spy?”
“Wasn’t it you who suppressed the news and didn’t want my identity revealed?” she asked.
“That was to protect you.”
“Protect me?” Scarlet let out a dry laugh, her eyes locked on him. “And what about all those times when you and Nicole kept showing up in the news? Was that protection too?”
William’s expression slowly cooled.
Scarlet continued, “Now that Dr. Parker knows I’m your wife, he treats me with respect. But when he finds out we’re divorced, and I no longer have the Cooper family backing, will he still care? Or will he make my life miserable and take out all the frustration from today on me?
“The word of our divorce has already spread through the department. Jeremy and Clementine were caught off guard today, but it won’t take them long to realize my so–called ‘backing‘ is nothing more than a paper shield. One strong gust of wind, and it’ll collapse.
“Or maybe it’ll collapse on its own in a few days, even without a gust. Have you ever thought about what my situation will be like then? Of course, you wouldn’t. You probably can’t even understand it.
“You were born with a silver spoon, adored wherever you go, enjoying every privilege others can offer. The darker sides of society have never been visible to you.”
This incident would soon be the talk of the hospital. Just the thought of the looks she’d face made Scarlet grimace.
“So what if we’re divorced? You’ll still be my ex–wife. Can’t you play the intimidation card? If anyone gives you trouble, just come to me. Do you really think I wouldn’t help?”
William went on, his frustration boiling over. “What kind of hospital is this anyway? Instead of focusing on treating patients, everyone’s climbing over each other to curry favor. Why didn’t you tell me that you’ve been dealing with this nonsense every single day?”
Telling him wouldn’t have helped. The frustration Scarlet endured with him far outweighed anything at the hospital.
Suddenly, she asked, “Do you remember the last time you came to see me at the hospital?”
As if doused with cold water, William’s anger vanished instantly.
“It was Christmas Eve. You came to celebrate my birthday. Remember?”
Nearly three years had passed.
She went on. “I was still at my residency hospital back then. You used to drive me to and from work every day. One of my fellow residents saw you.”
That classmate had always envied Scarlet for marrying before finishing her master’s degree, and for having a husband who was both handsome and caring. After graduation, Scarlet successfully joined this top–tier hospital, while that classmate went elsewhere.
Since she started here, William hadn’t picked her up even once. No one in the hospital had seen him.

“If you’d come even once in the past two years, my colleagues wouldn’t still be in the dark about who you are,” she added.
William’s expression was unreadable, and he fell into a long silence. Never one to lose an argument, he rarely found himself at a loss for words.
“I never relied on being William Cooper’s wife before, and I won’t need it in the future. I’ve already told everyone I’m in a posthumous marriage and that my husband is dead. You should have stayed gone instead of suddenly appearing and causing me trouble.”
William, who had been lost in thought, was caught off guard by her words.
“Posthumous marriage?” His expression hardened. With gritted teeth, he demanded, “Scarlet, is that how you’ve been cursing me behind my back all this time?”
