William glanced down at her and teased with a lazy, almost amused tone, “Looks like you’re having fun. Turning the hospital into a racetrack with a wheelchair?”
“I wasn’t racing,” Scarlet stammered, brushing his hand away and stepping back to put distance between them.
She was just about to ask why he was here when she noticed the man beside him. She froze for a second, then hastily greeted, “Dr. Parker.”
Having grown up causing trouble, Xyla knew perfectly well that whoever complained first seized the upper hand. Before Jeremy could speak, she cut in, “So you’re the hospital’s director? I’ve heard that Dr. Simpson is your distant niece. You all rigged the promotion process and gave her Dr. Benson’s slot.
“I’m just too upright for my own good. I couldn’t help but speak up when I saw something unfair. I never expected the two of them to gang up on me and even snatch my phone.”
She sniffled dramatically and continued, “I’m a defenseless patient with a broken leg, stuck in a wheelchair. They nearly beat me to death. Is this really a hospital, or some kind of gang hideout?”
Jeremy and Clementine were left dumbfounded.
Rowan Parker’s expression hardened as he shot Jeremy an icy glare. With a stern voice, he snapped, “Is this how you handle patient relations? You let things spiral out of control and even laid hands on a patient. Sounds to me like you don’t want to keep your position as chief physician.”
Jeremy, who had never suffered such an accusation in all his years of practice, hurriedly defended, “Dr. Parker, I didn’t touch her. You can check the security footage if you don’t trust me!”
“Enough!” Rowan glared at him and barked, “Haven’t you embarrassed us enough already? Apologize to her now.”
Swallowing his resentment, Jeremy had no choice but to relent. “My apologies, Ms. Turner. I was out of line.”
Xyla immediately held out her hand. “My phone.”
William’s gaze shifted to Scarlet.
She stood off to the side, her expression calm and detached. She was neither crying nor making a scene, and there was no attempt to seize the moment to rally support. She acted as if nothing had happened, as though the promotion that had been taken from her had nothing to do with her at all.
“So this is how promotions work here. It’s all about connections,” William remarked, his tone carrying a note of newfound understanding.
Dressed in a tailored light–gray suit that emphasized his broad shoulders and long legs, his elegance carried a rakish charm. that naturally drew attention.
The corner of his lips curved as he added casually, “Guess my wife’s connections just aren’t strong enough.”
His wife?
Clementine and Jeremy both looked utterly bewildered..
Scarlet shot William a warning look, silently telling him to stop. However, he seemed entirely oblivious. Not only did he ignore her cue, but he also kept going, adding fuel to the fire.
“No wonder you’ve been giving me the cold shoulder every day at home. Turns out you’ve been treated unfairly here and taking it out on me.”
Scarlet clenched her teeth.

Taking it out on him? That was a complete fabrication.
Clementine’s eyes darted back and forth between Scarlet and William, so fast they seemed ready to spark.
Scarlet was exasperated with William.
He’d been out of her life for over two years. She had no idea why he had suddenly shown up. They were already on the verge of divorce. Allowing their relationship to become public now would only make things more complicated.
Seeing that Scarlet was deliberately ignoring him to distance herself, William reached out and pulled her over. Right in front of everyone, he drew Scarlet into his arms with unmistakable intimacy.
When she tried to push him away, he caught her wrist, wrapped his right arm around her waist, and tugged her closer.
“It’s my fault. I’m not capable enough. Our family doesn’t have the kind of backing others do, so you end up putting up with this nonsense at work.”
With a mock seriousness, he added, “What should we do? Should I just buy the hospital for you to run?”
If there hadn’t been so many people watching, Scarlet would’ve stomped on his feet.
“Psycho! Since when can you buy a public hospital like it’s a toy?” she yelled inwardly.
