When Clementine realized Madison had been deliberately messing with her, anger flashed across her face, quickly replaced by smug satisfaction.
“I got promoted because I’m better than you. Jealousy won’t change a thing. But since you two must be feeling pretty miserable right now, I’ll be generous and let it slide.”
Scarlet didn’t bother responding.
After Clementine left, two senior colleagues came over and gently patted Scarlet on the shoulder, trying to comfort her.
“We all know this promotion should’ve gone to you. But there’s nothing we can do. Clementine is related to the hospital’s director.”
“Don’t worry,” another added. “It’ll definitely be your turn next year.”
Scarlet replied, “Madison and Dr. Campbell will also be up for promotion to attending physician next year. Who do you think should go first?”
Noah Campbell might not have the hospital’s director as an uncle, but his father–in–law was Logan Ziegler from the Medical Service Department. It was the very department in charge of title promotion. When the time came, it would be impossible for Logan not to prioritize his own son–in–law.
Everyone understood that, and so her colleagues fell silent.
Madison whined, “Then we’re doomed! Why does everyone in our department have such powerful connections except the two of us? After Dr. Campbell gets promoted next year, who knows, maybe another department head’s nephew will show up. When will it ever be our turn?”
Jeremy had a surgery scheduled that afternoon. Once it was over, Scarlet went to see him.
“Dr. Chesson, why didn’t I pass the promotion evaluation?” she asked.
As expected, he brushed it off with polished bureaucratic talk.
“Scarlet, your abilities are beyond question. If this were entirely up to me, your promotion would’ve been guaranteed. But unfortunately, I don’t get the final say.”
Holding his coffee mug, Jeremy continued solemnly, “The hospital had limited slots this year. Those promoted all have longer tenure than you. Based on seniority, it was only fair for them to go first. Don’t you agree?”
“Then what about Clementine?” Scarlet asked. “We joined the hospital the same year. She has the same seniority I do, weaker clinical skills, and fewer accomplishments. Why was she promoted before me?”
“You can’t put it that way. How is Clementine any less capable? You’re an excellent doctor, and so is she, right? You came in at the same time, and your abilities are comparable. Does it really matter who goes first? This year it’s her, next year it’ll be you.”
Scarlet had always been steady and low–key. She never fought for credit in the department and never made a fuss when she was being treated unfairly.
Jeremy had assumed she was meek, but to his surprise, she shot back, “If it doesn’t matter who goes first, then why wasn’t it. me?”
Stumped by her retort, Jeremy scowled. “Honestly, Scarlet, you’re too arrogant, always trying to stand out. With only one. slot available, why should it go to you first? Look at how humble Clementine is.”
“Because she isn’t qualified,” Scarlet said bluntly. “She’s the first graduate from a third–tier medical school to ever get into our hospital. I won’t comment on the quality of education at her school, but look at her record. How many mistakes and
