h, nothing much, really. Mostly about you not having a sex life, being infertile, and giving birth to a baby with two buttholes…” Scarlet thought to herself.
Lucy immediately pinched Scarlet and shot her a pleading look.
Scarlet winced. “She said you’re good at managing people.”
Ian shot Lucy a knowing look. The latter’s eyes darted around. Clearly, she was too guilty to meet his gaze.
“So, she didn’t say anything nice about me.”
“Who said that? Everything I said was nice!” Lucy elbowed Scarlet again. “Quick, make something else up!”
Scarlet almost coughed up blood.
“Alright, I’ll let you off this time,” Ian said. “Your friend has moved and probably has a lot to do. I’ll give you the day off. Stay here and help her.”
Lucy pretentiously said, “That won’t do, Mr. Caldwell! I haven’t finished my proposal yet. Everyone else is working. How can I take the day off?”
“Save it. You’re clearly not in the right headspace to work today. You’d just torture my other employees if you go in.”
Scarlet chimed in politely, “I’m sorry to have troubled you today. If you don’t mind, please come in for a cup of coffee.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t want to take up your time,” Ian responded. “I showed up out of the blue and didn’t know you’d just moved, so I didn’t bring a gift with me. I’ll be sure to make it up to you another day. Congratulations on your new home!”
Lucy’s boss was nothing like what Scarlet had imagined. Based on Lucy’s descriptions, he was supposed to be a five–foot- five, ugly, cold–blooded villain. Scarlet hadn’t expected him to be so polite and handsome.
“Thank you, but you really don’t have to be so polite.”
“I should be.”
The two of them went back and forth, and Scarlet couldn’t have been more amiable.
William was completely ignored, and it didn’t sit well with him. “Why didn’t you invite me in for a cup of coffee?”
Scarlet shot him a look that clearly said she had no intention of doing so.
Lucy snapped, “Coffee my foot!”
Right after saying that, she yanked Scarlet inside and tried to close the door.
William grasped Scarlet’s wrist. He had rushed all the way here, his palm burning hot against her pale, smooth wrist. “We need to talk.”
Scarlet tried to break free from his grasp, but his fingers tightened around her wrist. William shifted his gaze to Lucy, who was tactless and waiting for the right moment to swing at him. “Give us a moment.”
Lucy bristled. “Why should-”
Before she could finish, lan hauled her away. “Your friend probably still needs a few things. Come downstairs with me to buy them.” Thus, he dragged her off.
After Lucy and fan left, the noisy hallway fell silent. The sudden stillness felt heavy.
William and Scarlet faced each other for a moment. Scarlet twisted her wrist and broke free from his grasp.
William’s hand was empty, and so was his chest. It was hollow and aching like a black hole. “Let’s head inside and talk.”

Scarlet hesitated.
William scoffed and adjusted his collar. “What are you afraid of? I haven’t touched you in over two years, and we’re about to get a divorce. Do you seriously think I’m going to take you here? You’re not that irresistible.”
Scarlet was rendered speechless. She desperately wanted to hurl her slipper at his face.
