you really come knocking on my door this early in the morning just to ask that?”
Moving was a real pain in the ass, and Scarlet was a perfectionist. She couldn’t relax until everything was properly packed and sorted.
Scarlet had been packing until 5:00 am. After less than four hours of sleep, she was jolted awake by him.
Scarlet was at a loss for words. Her mind was still foggy, and her voice came out soft and nasal. “I was packing last night.”
William was so livid his chest ached. As soon as he hung up on Lucy, he rang the hospital. Scarlet’s colleague told him she hadn’t shown up for work.
His heart sank to the bottom of his stomach. He sped here like a man possessed, bracing himself for the worst. In the end, she had just been packing.
“You couldn’t even answer your phone while you were packing? It takes what, a few minutes?”
Scarlet was caught off guard by his outburst. Her brows knitted together as she asked, “What, is ignoring calls your exclusive right? Why is it an issue when I do it?”
William said, “Something came up yesterday. Howard drove recklessly and hit Nicole. I took her to the hospital and accidentally left my phone in the car.”
“You don’t have to explain. I didn’t ask either.” Scarlet held his gaze calmly. “Besides, it’s not like you only ignored my calls yesterday.”
William was rendered speechless.
Just then, the elevator chimed. Lucy burst out, and the moment she spotted Scarlet, she started bawling as she sprinted over. She seized Scarlet and shook her like a madwoman. “You literally gave me a heart attack! I thought something happened to you! I looked everywhere for you!”
Scarlet hurriedly wrapped her arms around her, patting her back to calm her down. On top of that, she wiped Lucy’s tears away with her sleeve. Her voice was impossibly gentle as she consoled her. “I’m fine. I’m seriously fine. Dry those tears now.”
Lucy wailed, “Why did you not answer my calls? Your phone was off! Do you have any idea how terrifying it is when a youngin’s phone goes dead these days?”
“I’m sorry. I was moving last night. I packed until 5:00 am, and I didn’t know where I had misplaced my phone. I looked everywhere and couldn’t find it.”
Scarlet had forgotten to turn off silent mode after her night shift. The place was a mess, boxes piled everywhere. So, she set her phone down casually, without knowing that would be the last time she’d see it.
It probably ran out of battery and died. In the end, Scarlet was beat and too tired to look for it, so she went to bed.
“I was worried you would grow anxious because you couldn’t reach me. I couldn’t log into WhatsApp on my laptop, so I emailed you. I even left you a message on Instagram. Did you not see them?”
William watched them coldly from the side. The explanation she gave Lucy was far more detailed than anything she had offered him. She had even considered Lucy’s feelings. The difference in how she treated them couldn’t have been more obvious.
William felt as though there was a wad of cotton stuck in his chest. “Did it not occur to you that I’d be worried as well?”
Scarlet glanced at him while holding Lucy. The look on her face clearly said, “You? Worried about me? Yeah, right.”
His chest started to ache again.

Chapter 66
2121
Lucy’s fear and anxiety boiled down to a single word. “Damn!”
Who would have thought this was the reason?
“I’d just gotten to the office this morning, and I didn’t even have time to check my email. My Instagram account was compromised ages ago. I can’t log in anymore,” Lucy said.
Scarlet asked, “When you couldn’t find me, why didn’t you come here? I told you I was getting ready to move back here.”
In hindsight, this entire incident had been fueled largely by Lucy herself. For a split second, she felt guilty.
“It’s all my fault!”
“Of course it’s not. It’s my fault.” Knowing she was in the wrong and noticing she was so anxious she’d cried, Scarlet owned up to it right away. “You came at the perfect time. Help me look for my phone.”
Lucy fumed. “When I find it, I’m smashing it to pieces!”
“Alright, alright, you can do whatever you want with it.” Right after saying that, Scarlet looked at the man who had tagged along with Lucy.
William noticed Ian was present then.
Ian greeted him politely first. “Mr. Cooper.”
Then, he turned to Scarlet and introduced himself. “I’m Ian.”
“Oh, so you’re Lucy’s boss!” Realization dawned on Scarlet.
“Does she talk about me a lot?” Ian asked. “What did she tell you?”
