Chapter 39

Scarlet went back to separate Lucy and Xyla, who were still tearing each other’s hair out.

“Come on. How old are you guys?”

Lucy scoffed coldly and smoothed her hair down. “I only used a third of my actual strength because she’s injured. If I’d used my usual strength, I could have knocked her out with one slap.”

Xyla scoffed, too. “Your horse must be on stilts, because that is a high horse you’re on. Once my leg heals, I’ll give you a taste of my actual strength!”

“To be honest,” Lucy said, glancing at Scarlet’s slim arms, “even though Xyla’s crippled right now, she’s worth three of you when it comes to fighting.”

“The pen is mightier than the sword,” Scarlet said stubbornly. “I just don’t like violence. It doesn’t mean I can’t beat you.”

Before Lucy could reply, Xyla started snickering. “You? Against her? She just needs to sit on you to win.”

Scarlet and Lucy fell silent. Xyla had managed to insult both of them at the same time.

Scarlet patted Lucy on the shoulder. “It’s time to go.”

“Are you guys leaving already?” Xyla pouted, acting pitiful. “If you guys leave, who’s going to play with a cripple like me?”

Scarlet picked up her coat and turned back to Xyla. “You should be going back to the hospital. Send me a picture once you’re back in your ward. If I don’t receive your picture by 10:00 pm, I’m going to talk to the nurse in charge.”

Xyla’s smile faded.

Lucy had had way too much fun. She had driven to the party, but she had also just drunk alcohol.

She waved a hand. “It’s fine. I only had a sip.”

As she spoke, she tried climbing into her G-Wagon, but Scarlet dragged her by the collar into the Bentley parked at the

entrance.

William was sitting with his legs crossed in the backseat. He looked bored and displeased, and seemed to have something on

his mind.

Scarlet said, “Let’s send Lucy home first.”

William glanced at her. “Would I dare to say no to that temper of yours, Mrs. Cooper?”

“Petty jerk,” Scarlet thought to herself.

She couldn’t be bothered to answer him. She simply told Lester Lucy’s address.

Lucy kept feeling around the passenger seat and asked him, “Sir, do you like driving a Bentley?”

“Sorry?” Lester never thought that quiet, introverted Scarlet would have such an extroverted best friend. “It’s a good car.”

Lucy grinned sneakily. “Let me give it a go one day.”

Lester glanced at William’s expression in the rearview mirror. Awkwardly, he replied, “Um, Ms. Rosen, this is Mr. Cooper’s

car.”

“Well, you can let me sneak in and give it a quick test drive when he’s on a business trip,” Lucy replied.

Lester looked at her, at a loss for words.

Even Scarlet was speechless. “At least say it when William isn’t around,” she thought to herself.
