Chapter 32
Scarlet frowned. “I’m not a robot. I need a break, too.”
Xyla’s voice was bright on the other end. “Where do you live? I’ll come hang out with you.”
Scarlet cut her off flatly. “Bye.”
No sooner had she dealt with Xyla, Lucy called.
“Babe! Get ready-I’ll be at your place in ten minutes! My boss gave me two tickets to a show. Come on, you’re coming with me!”
Her perfectly good day off just got hijacked.
Scarlet closed her book. “Give me a minute. I’ll go get changed.”
Only Lucy could call and drag her out like this on a weekend.
Scarlet quickly touched up her makeup and changed. By the time she stepped outside, Lucy was already waiting, leaning against a black G-Wagon, sunglasses on, hands on her hips, striking a dramatic pose.
As Scarlet walked past, she swiped the sunglasses off Lucy and slid them onto her own face.
“Hey!” Lucy’s cool facade crumbled instantly. “Do you not swoon, seeing me look this awesome? And you stole my shades!”
“I only steal from the awesome,” Scarlet shot back. “Do I look cool?”
She wore a caramel-colored coat that made her lips stand out, and her fair skin looked radiant. With her small face tucked behind oversized black shades, she looked like a movie star stepping out for a night on the town.
“You’re killing me with beauty-I won’t even lie.” Lucy pouted. “Come on, give me a kiss!”
Scarlet pushed her away. “Try that again, and I’m leaving.”
Once in the car, Lucy immediately stuck her hand out, like a cat expecting a treat. “My boss lost a bet and let me borrow his car for a few days. How cool is that?”
Scarlet grabbed her hand and squirted some sanitizer on it. “With your luck in betting, you’re set for life.”
Lucy had a talent for winning any bet. Ever since they were kids, she’d scored a year free of chores, three grand in pocket money from a rich kid, and even snagged the college crush of her biggest rival.
When her rival grudgingly gave her the contact, Lucy sent a voice message. “Your girlfriend doesn’t want you anymore! Haha!”
She rubbed her hands together and started the car stereo, blasting her boss’ playlist. She couldn’t stand it and kept skipping tracks, complaining, “What kind of music taste is this?”
Finally, a song she liked came on, and she sang along passionately while driving.
“But you didn’t have to cut me off. Make out like It never happened and that we were nothing. And I don’t even need your love. But you treat me like a stranger, and that feels so rough.”
Scarlet glanced at the screen. “What song is this?”
“It’s Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye,” Lucy said. “Is this your first time hearing this?”
“Yes,” Scarlet said. “But… somehow, it hits. It feels like it’s about William and me.”
William had only loved her in a brief, fiery moment before stepping away like it didn’t matter. She’d been left to simmer alone, torturing herself for over two years.

Scarlet couldn’t help laughing.
Her phone rang at that exact moment.
As a doctor, she got plenty of calls from unknown numbers, as some patients would follow up after appointments. So, she answered without thinking.
It was Nicole. “Scarlet?”
“Yes. What’s up?” Her smile was faint, guarded.
“I thought I might have the wrong number,” Nicole said. “It’s nothing serious. I just got back, and Shaun and the others insisted on throwing me a welcome-home party. I told them it wasn’t necessary, but they still rounded up a bunch of friends to help and made it a whole big deal.”
She sounded slightly exasperated.
Scarlet pursed her lips, giving nothing away.
Shaun and his friends treated Nicole completely differently from how they treated her. After all, they’d grown up together.
Hearing no response, Nicole continued, “I was wondering if you might come tonight. We haven’t seen each other in so long.” Scarlet was about to decline, but Nicole added with a laugh, “You’re not going to use work as an excuse, right? I checked with William, and he said you have the day off.”
