Chapter 30

Scarlet grabbed a pillow at random and swung it at William’s head with all her strength.

William jolted from the impact, but his hand still clamped around her ankle without loosening an inch. He snorted. “You really don’t hold back, huh?”

If that had been a rock instead of a pillow, he’d be seeing stars, or worse.

With a swift motion, he snatched the pillow from her hands and tossed it across the room.

Scarlet’s cheeks flushed with anger. “Let go of me!”

“Oh, come on. Isn’t this part of being a proper couple? Your husband’s driven by desire, so it’s your marital duty to help him out a little.”

He leaned down, his scent thick with masculine heat, pressing her beneath him. One hand cupped the nape of her neck, holding her in place.

Scarlet was furious, helpless, and terrified that he might actually hurt her. She blurted out, “Marital duty my ass!”

William, still simmering with anger, nearly laughed at her weak attempt at an insult.

Idiot. She couldn’t even swear properly.

He turned his face to the side, stifled a laugh, then looked back at her flushed face and red ears. He said casually, teasing, Your ass, huh? That’s cute. Can’t even curse properly, can you?”

Scarlet was speechless. Rolling her eyes, she said, “Get off me.”

William shifted his grip on her neck, his thumb brushing teasingly under her ear. “You haven’t finished your duty yet. Where do you think you’re going?”

Scarlet immediately recognized the shift in his tone. Earlier, he was genuinely angry. Now, this was mischief, pure teasing. She pushed with her hands and feet, finally managing to shove him off her. He hadn’t been holding on seriously, anyway.

He tumbled to the side, half-reclining against the headboard, watching her bounce off the bed like a cornered mouse and dart toward the bathroom.

Scarlet slammed the door and locked it.

William stepped off the bed, calmly smoothing the collar of his shirt, perfectly composed despite the chaos.

The moment the door clicked shut, his voice carried in. “I never slept with another woman.”

Cold water hit her face, washing over the heat still lingering in her cheeks.

She forced herself to calm down, refusing to let a few words get to her. Whether he slept with anyone else didn’t change anything. He had stopped loving Scarlet a long time ago.

Meanwhile, William strode downstairs, his hands in his dress pants’ pockets, and entered the kitchen.

Ruth shrank back, clutching a dish towel, keeping her distance while carefully wiping down the glass case filled with antiques.

William stood at the counter, placing a cup under the filtered water dispenser. As the clear water ran, he asked calmly; “You told Scarlet I cheated?”

Ruth nearly jumped out of her skin. “No! Those were just rumors. I never said anything like that!”

William glanced down at the cup, his tone casual but cutting. “Rumors? From who?”
