In another moment, Scarlet was surrounded by a crowd packed shoulder to shoulder, loud with laughter. She was swept along in the middle. It was as if her protective shell had been stripped away, and she felt like a naked snail, exposed. She felt uneasy and terrified. 

Meanwhile, William remained above it all like a distant god, seated in a blinding spotlight. There was a cold, merciless smile on his face, and his voice sounded like a demon’s whisper, echoing with the cruelty of a slow execution. 

He said, “If I can’t marry the one I want, can’t I just marry someone else to make do?” 

Scarlet woke up drowned in overwhelming sadness. As her face felt cold, she raised a hand to touch it, only to realize she had been crying. 

It felt as though a piece of her heart had been hollowed out, leaving behind a long, dull ache that spread through her limbs and gnawed at her nerves. Yet, she had no idea what could ever fill that emptiness. 

After waking up, Scarlet didn’t sleep well for the rest of the night. Every time she closed her eyes, scenes from the past replayed themselves, including William at his best and him at his worst. 

She drifted in and out of sleep. Because of that, when she woke up in the early morning, she had a headache. 

At work, everyone who saw her asked her the same question. “Why do you look so pale?” 

Scarlet just replied that she hadn’t slept well.
