Chapter 23
William had even planned out the entire itinerary. As a result, Scarlet genuinely began to look forward to it. She searched online for things to do in Icemere and meticulously made travel plans.
She heard that spring in Icemere was wonderful. The Northern Lights would still be visible, flowers would bloom, and seabirds that had flown south for the winter would return. Tens of thousands of them would sweep across the sea in spectacular waves.
In the end, the honeymoon never happened-the plan was just gone. William started coming home less, too. Whenever Scarlet gave him a call, he was distant. Even when he did return, it was always very late. He would shower and go straight to sleep without exchanging more than a word with her.
She had no idea what had gone wrong. At the time, she was dizzy with what she thought was love. So, she wasn’t able to understand why he had suddenly grown cold.
Back then, William had just broken away from Cooper Group and founded Bova Capital on his own. Proud, he didn’t want to rely on his family’s influence. Nonetheless, for a newly established equity firm to secure IPO deals from publicly listed companies wasn’t easy.
Scarlet kept comforting herself, thinking William must have been too busy with work to come home. He must have been too
exhausted to talk.
That was when she loved him the most.
Driven by blind courage, she showed up uninvited at Shaun’s birthday party just to see him. That was where she heard the words that would surface again and again in the dead of night, jolting her awake in a cold sweat.
It wasn’t until someone at the party noticed her that pairs of eyes turned toward her. Their gazes were filled with nothing but contempt and pity.
It was only then that Scarlet finally understood. It wasn’t because William was busy-it was just that she wasn’t worth it. He was still in love with Nicole, and she was nothing more than a marriage he had been forced into.
To William, Scarlet was someone to pass the time with on a whim before tossing her aside once he got bored.
Scarlet placed the gift she brought for Shaun down. As she walked out, her back was perfectly straight. No one knew how humiliated she felt.
Her pride was shattered by William himself. He had lifted her into the clouds with his own hands only to let her fall just as
hard.
After that, the relationship between Scarlet and William became distant. Not long afterward, he went to Nevala
Rumors spread, saying that he was still hung up on Nicole and that he was dissatisfied with being forced by his family to marry a woman he didn’t love. They said he had gone overseas to reunite with Nicole.
Meanwhile, Scarlet built her walls again. For a long time, aside from Lucy, she barely spoke to anyone.
When Scarlet returned to the villa at No. 9 Wolke Bay, the house was quiet.
Ruth heard the noise and hurried out, speaking excitedly. “I have a friend who works as a caretaker in No. 12. She looks after elderly people. Her employers’ children have all settled overseas, so the person she’s taking care of is home alone with nothing to do.
“I casually mentioned it the other day and said that we could give them one of our kittens. I asked her to see if they wanted one, and she got back to me today, saying they do want it. Their whole family even held a video conference to vote on it. They’re so formal!”

Thinking she had done something great, she looked a little eager for praise.
Scarlet nodded and replied, “Once the kittens are two months old and finish their vaccinations, send one over to them.”
“They still need vaccinations? They’ve already prepared a cat bed, food, and everything else. I’ll let them know,” responded Ruth, not knowing there were so many requirements.
She added, “I have other friends, too. I’ll ask around later and see if anyone else wants one.”
Ruth was usually bored at home. Ever since Scarlet had caught her red-handed last time, Ruth hadn’t dared to play poker again. Now that she finally had something to do, she was motivated.
Ruth added, “Once all the kittens are gone, Mr. Cooper won’t have to worry about allergies anymore. By then, he can come home every day.”
Scarlet paused briefly on the stairs but didn’t say anything. In truth, William’s not coming home had nothing to do with the cats at all. He simply didn’t want to come back.
That night, Scarlet once again couldn’t sleep. She tossed and turned until she eventually got up and took a melatonin pill. After waiting half an hour for it to kick in, she finally felt drowsy. However, she didn’t have a sound sleep. She kept having messy dreams.
One moment, snow was falling heavily outside the window, and she was pinned beneath a man. Their breaths were swallowed by a storm of kisses. His voice was very gentle as he called her name again and again, close to her ear. “Scarlet…”
