Divorced While Pregnant The Ex-Husband’s Collapse 62

Jeffrey stood with one hand tucked into the pocket of his dress pants, his expression indifferent. His expression was darker than the night itself. He watched in silence, with his lips pressed lightly together.

Natalie helped Daniel into the car, closed the door, and waved. “Goodbye, Mr. Wagner. Johnson, thank you for the trouble. Please make sure you get him back to the hotel safely.”

Johnson nodded. “Yes. You head home early and get some rest too.”

The car drove off, and Natalie’s spirits were lifted. The future looked promising.

Natalie tucked the strands of hair that had come loose from the wind behind her ears. “Stacy, thank you. Otherwise, I would’ve-”

Stacy cut in casually, “Come on, it’s us. Why are you being so polite? I’d been holding myself back all this time just to give you a huge surprise. So, are you happy? It’s totally unexpected, right?”

Natalie nodded.

Stacy then asked, “First, tell me what’s going on between you and Jeffrey. Are you two not getting along?”

Faced with the blunt question, Natalie simply said, “We’re divorced.”

Stacy sucked in a sharp breath. “What? Did you ask for it, or did he?”

“I did,” Natalie replied.

“You?” Stacy grabbed Natalie by the shoulders, giving her a once–over. She asked, “What happened to you, Nat? You loved him to death and swore you’d marry no one else. You actually initiated the divorce?”

Natalie smiled. “He doesn’t love me, and he never will. There’s no reason for me to spend my whole life with a husband whose heart belongs to another woman.‘

She could say it so calmly now. Admitting that you weren’t loved took enormous courage. Before, she didn’t want to admit it, nor face it.

She always thought that if she sacrificed a little more and stayed by his side a little longer, he’d eventually see her worth and come back to her. Only later did she realize that a man’s heart could be harder than stone. Jeffrey’s, most of all.

No, he wasn’t heartless to everyone. He was only heartless to her.

Stacy let out a long sigh. “I warned you back then, but you just wouldn’t listen. I couldn’t do

anything else. I still had to be your bridesmaid. You have no idea what that felt like. At your wedding, watching Jeffrey stand there with that poker face, I wanted to rip your ring off and throw it at his face for you.

“But you liked him, and you were willing to marry him, so I couldn’t say much. And I thought that you two still had a decent foundation, after all. After more than ten years of growing up together, I thought he might slowly treat you better after marriage.”

Natalie replied, “It’s all in the past now. No need to bring it up. Stacy, I’m only 27. It’s not too late to start over now, right?”

Stacy said, “Of course! Who wants to be Mrs. Foster? Be successful on your own terms!”

Smiling, Natalie was just about to say something when she caught sight of Jeffrey out of the corner of her eye. He was walking straight toward her. What rotten luck to run into him even here!

Stacy’s phone happened to ring at that exact moment, and she immediately jogged off to the side to take the call.

Jeffrey stopped in front of Natalie, dressed in a gray suit. There was a casual, mocking smile on his face. “So, this is what you mean by focusing on your career? Running a gallery by clinging to old men for resources?”

Jeffrey was still Jeffrey. The moment he opened his mouth, she just wanted to slap him. He

must have seen her sending Daniel off.

She didn’t want to explain herself, so she just replied, “Yes. Even if I have to latch onto a 60- year–old man, I still won’t go back to you, my ex–husband.”

Jeffrey’s expression turned icy in an instant. He narrowed his eyes and stepped closer, forcing her to move backward. “Are you back to causing trouble again? Can’t you stay quiet for even a moment?”

His gaze was fierce, and Natalie took another step back. But she refused to lose. “I’m free to choose whatever I want to do. It has nothing to do with you. What right do you have to interfere in my life?”

Jeffrey roared, “We’ll see if I can!”

That old man’s hair was already gray, and his hands were wrinkled. The guy was old enough to be her grandfather! And yet, she hadn’t even pulled away when he was holding her hand. Instead, she smiled so brightly!

Jeffrey burned with rage. Now that he thought about it, she hadn’t smiled at him that brilliantly in a very long ti
