Chapter 18

Once she divorced Rowan, Natalie would agree to let Sarah keep any kind of pet she wanted.

“But it will die,” Sarah said softly, clutching the puppy in her arms. She only wanted the puppy she was holding.

“Give it to me. I’ll raise it at my place. If you miss it, you can come to my house and visit it, Sally,” Lucian said as he gently stroked the puppy in Sarah’s arms.

“Really?” Sarah asked, her eyes lighting up.

“Of course,” Lucian replied with a smile. “My place is big enough. There’s no way it can’t accommodate such a little fellow.”

He carefully took the puppy from Sarah’s arms. It was so tiny that it fit neatly in the palm of his hand.

“I wish my dad were like you, Luc,” Sarah said sadly. “He never lets me keep pets.”

Natalie glanced at the time. It was almost 7:00 pm, so she told Sarah that it was time to go home.

When they returned to the villa, Natalie assumed that since Imogen had taken Roger away, Rowan and Roger wouldn’t be home that night.

Instead, not only were they home, but a lavish dinner had already been prepared in the dining room.

“You’re back. Go wash your hands and come eat,” Rowan said, putting down the magazine in his hand as he stood up and led Roger toward the dining room.

Sarah looked up at Natalie. Natalie smiled indulgently and gently ruffled her hair before the two of them went to wash their

hands.

Sarah’s eyes were filled with surprise, as if she could hardly believe her father had prepared dinner for them.

In the seven years of their marriage, Natalie had always been the one cooking. She had never eaten a ready-made meal at home. Even with Pamela at home, Natalie still had to do all the cooking herself.

“Where did you two go? You made Daddy and me wait so long. I’m starving!” Roger complained angrily from his seat at the dining table.

Sarah couldn’t help but snap back. “Mommy and I wait for you every night without saying a single word. You waited for us just once, and you’re already impatient?”

“Today the company didn’t have any meetings, so I got off work early. I even had a chef from a luxury hotel come over to cook at home,” Rowan said, placing some celery onto Natalie’s plate with his fork.

Natalie looked at the celery and immediately moved it aside.

“Mommy, Daddy served you food, so why aren’t you appreciating it?” Roger frowned, scolding her. “You got home so late, and when Daddy and I came back, there was nothing ready in the kitchen, so Daddy had to spend money to hire a chef to cook at home.”

“Mommy’s allergic to celery. If she eats it, she’ll break out in a rash,” Sarah spoke up for Natalie.

“You’re allergic to celery?” Rowan blurted.

After seven years of marriage, he still knew nothing about Natalie’s preferences, let alone the fact that she was allergic to celery. Even their young daughter knew, yet this cold and distant father and son still had the nerve to comment.

“Then don’t eat this,” Rowan said stiffly as he moved the entire celery dish away. “Try the beef stew instead.”

“Mommy likes spicy food,” Sarah said, picking up a piece of spicy chicken tender with her fork and offering it to Natalie.

Natalie took a bite and smiled at Sarah. “Wow, this is really good.”

Rowan’s expression darkened slightly. He stopped paying attention to her and focused on his own meal.

When someone suddenly showed kindness for no reason, it was never without an agenda.

Rowan’s sudden attentiveness toward her was obvious, and Natalie knew exactly what it meant. In the past, whenever he did something that hurt her, he would soften his attitude in front of her.

But the moment things didn’t go his way, his true nature would resurface.

After staying out all night and being intimate with Imogen, he was probably feeling a trace of guilt.
