The first time I really lost control was when a man hit Sebastian across the face during an argument. I went crazy. I hit that grown man like he was nothing. People had to drag me off him. I remembered the stunned looks on their faces when they watched me beat him. Even after paying his medical bills, I didn’t regret it.

No one laid a hand on my brother and got away with it.

And now, standing here, I felt that same rage boiling inside me, the same madness that made everyone around me look like prey. I had swallowed their insults, their threats, their games, all for Sebastian’s sake. I never wanted anything from them, only for them to leave him alone. How hard was that? But now they had hurt him. And for that, I was going to make them pay. Starting with Riley.

My aunt screamed. “Oh my God! What are you doing?! Stay away from her this instant!” She pushed herself up, Nora groaning under her weight. My aunt took a step toward me, but I turned slowly, my face dark.

“Take one more step,” I said coldly, “and I will redesign your daughter’s face with this knife.”

She froze. She could see in my eyes that I meant it.

The knife pressed against Riley’s neck, her pulse hammering beneath the blade. My other hand gripped her hair tight, holding her in place. She shook in my grasp, her smug smile gone. She had never looked so terrified before.

A plate slipped from someone’s fingers somewhere behind us and shattered on the floor. I looked up to see Harper standing in the doorway, hand over her mouth, eyes wide in fear. When she realized I was looking at her, she stepped back quickly, as if she was afraid I’d come for her next.

Nora rolled her eyes. “Why are you all being so dramatic? She’s only doing this to get attention. There’s no way she’d actually hurt Riley.”

The room went silent. Even Riley froze under my grip, afraid to breathe. Her glare burned into Nora. “Nora, don’t be stupid. Just shut the hell up.”

Nora blinked, stunned, as if she couldn’t believe Riley had spoken to her that way. She’d probably expected Riley to take her side like always, but Riley knew I wasn’t bluffing. She knew I could really kill her.

I ignored Nora. I never cared about her, and I never would. To me, she was just a woman clinging to my ex-boyfriend, flaunting him like he meant something. It didn’t matter to me anymore.

Riley watched me, swallowed, and said, “Violet, let’s talk about it-”

I tightened my grip on her hair until she let out a small sound.

“Yes. Let’s talk,” I said. “Was it you?”

Riley blinked, trying to keep her face calm. “M-me? What? I have no idea what you’re talking about…” she stammered.

“Is that so?” I asked flatly. I put the tip of the knife in my mouth, then raised my hand and slapped her hard across the face. The crack of the slap made her yell, and she stumbled back, hitting the floor on her back.

Everyone froze. Even Nora went pale. She could tell I was serious.

I moved forward and put my weight over Riley, sitting on her so she couldn’t get up. When she tried to push herself up she shouted, “You crazy bitch-!”

I wrapped my fingers around her throat, digging in just enough to make her choke. With my other hand, I held the knife

mere inches from her right eye. Her breath came in short, panicked gasps. Everyone around us stepped back, fear etched across their faces.

“You know what I’m talking about, Riley,” I shouted. “Were you the one who messed with my brother?!”

Riley stared at me, trembling. Her eyes darted to the knife, and in that fleeting glance, she gave herself away. She did it.

She caused my brother’s accident.

“I can explain,” she gasped.

“Explain?” I hissed. “EXPLAIN? Sebastian’s in a fucking coma! What the hell could you possibly explain?!”

Riley’s eyes widened in shock. “What? Your brother is in a coma? Violet, I—”

“How could you do this? Why would you do that?!” I pressed harder. Her face flushed red as she gagged, struggling for air where my fingers dug in.

“Riley!” Nora screamed. “Stop it, Violet! You’re going to kill her!”

I almost laughed, the sound bitter. “What do you think I was planning on doing?”

Riley’s voice broke into a whimper, small and terrified, like a trapped animal. “I didn’t mean-”

“Stop it! Please, Violet, don’t kill my daughter! You’ll ruin your life too. You still have a future ahead of you. Do you want to throw it all away over something like this? If you don’t value her life, at least value your own!” my aunt begged, desperation in her voice.

“My life?” I echoed flatly, my gaze icy. “You don’t understand. My life was Sebastian. He was everything to me, and you people took him away. I have nothing left to lose. My brother is fighting for his life right now, and I swear, I will make your daughter pay, just like she made my brother suffer.”

I didn’t care anymore. Every part of me had gone numb. My heart screamed for me to stop, that this was wrong, that Sebastian would hate me if he saw me like this. If I went through with it, I would become a killer and lose myself.

Tears streaked my face as I thought of Sebastian, lying in a hospital bed, hooked to machines, while people around him whispered and laughed as if his life were a game.

I was done holding back.

My hands trembled with fury. I raised the knife. “See you in hell, Riley.”

I swung.
