Healing Slowly But Surely By R. Joseph 142 Summary

In “Healing Slowly But Surely,” the protagonist Zevran grapples with the emotional fallout of a failed reconciliation attempt with Leilani, a woman who has recently taken them to court. The story opens with the shocking moment when security is called to remove them from her office, a situation that Zevran attributes to his brother Caelum’s misguided belief that gifts could mend their relationship. The tension escalates as Leilani’s beauty captivates Zevran, yet her cold demeanor and sharp words remind him of the distance that now exists between them.

Zevran and his brothers face the harsh reality of Leilani’s rejection, which culminates in her decision to file a restraining order against them. This moment deeply wounds Zevran, as he realizes that the love they once shared has diminished to a painful memory. The emotional turmoil is palpable as they gather the gifts they had brought, feeling like mere shadows in Leilani’s life. Her indifference and the finality of her words leave Zevran questioning how their bond could have deteriorated so drastically.

As they leave, the brothers receive distressing news about their business, which is now at risk due to Leilani’s actions. While Zevran finds a strange amusement in her ability to challenge them, Kael is visibly upset, trying to reach out to her without success. The brothers’ attempts to communicate with Leilani are thwarted, leading to a sense of helplessness and frustration. Zevran’s internal conflict intensifies as he grapples with the fear of being blocked, which would further shatter his already fragile heart.

Ultimately, the chapter captures the deep emotional scars left by their failed attempts at reconciliation and the realization that Leilani has moved on. Zevran’s reluctance to confront her reflects his vulnerability, as he is caught between the desire to mend their relationship and the fear of further rejection. The story ends on a note of uncertainty, highlighting the complexities of love and the painful process of healing.

*By R. Joseph*

The weight of the moment was unbearable.

Zevran.

“SECURITY!”

Those words landed like a punch to my gut, sending shockwaves through my entire being. I recoiled instinctively, as if I had been physically struck, and turned to my brothers, who mirrored my bewilderment with expressions of shock and confusion.

Goddess, this ridiculous scheme was all Caelum’s doing. I had implored him, time and again, about how utterly insane it was to think that bringing gifts to Leilani would somehow mend the rift between us.

And let’s not forget the small detail that she had recently taken us to court.

Yet, he had been unyielding in his conviction.

In his own words, he had declared, “All women love gifts!” And yet, Leilani was the glaring exception to that rule. She always seemed to be an exception!

As I stood there, the memory of her horror-stricken face when she walked into her office and found us there, surrounded by the numerous gifts we had painstakingly gathered, flooded my mind. It was clear then that we had once again overstepped our bounds.

Why couldn’t we ever get it right with her?

My spiraling thoughts were abruptly interrupted when the door swung open mere moments later, and two imposing security guards strode in. Behind them was Leilani, and oh, how breathtaking she was!

Too breathtaking.

Her silver hair flowed like a shimmering waterfall down her slender frame, and her skin glowed radiantly under the harsh office lights. For a fleeting moment, I was convinced that she had been crafted on a Sabbath day, perhaps even on the birthday of the moon goddess herself.

The sight of her tightened my chest, rendering me momentarily breathless. I was utterly transfixed, entranced by the ethereal beauty that was her presence.

Goodness, I felt like a character in a Shakespearean play, lost in the poetry of the moment…

Her sharp voice cut through the air, snapping me back to reality. “They’re Alphas, John, so don’t you dare lay a hand on them. They can take you down, but help them out of my office. And make sure they take their gifts with them.”

One of the security officers turned to her with wide eyes, his surprise almost comical. He didn’t need to utter a single word for us to grasp the full extent of his shock. I stepped forward, wanting to ease his burden, and drawled, “We’ll leave.”

“Please do, Alphas… and your gifts; my lady with you.”

I flashed a cold smile at the guard before shifting my gaze back to Leilani, who stood by the corner, her fingers flying over her phone, completely ignoring us.

Seeing her like this—so distant, so stunning yet utterly unreachable—made my heart ache with an intensity I hadn’t anticipated. I nodded, then turned to my brothers, who, despite the guards’ arrival, remained kneeling in their remorse. I snapped, “Stand up! Let’s go!”

Yet, they didn’t move right away. Caelum, of all us, looked the most conflicted. His eyes were heavy with emotion as he reluctantly stood, and in a low voice, barely above a whisper, he uttered, “Leilani, I’d let you punch me in the face again. You can knock out ten of my teeth this time—just give us a chance to talk. Even for a minute.”

Goddess, I knew it was inappropriate, but I nearly laughed at his desperation, at the regret etched across his face, and at how he looked at her as if she were the sun, the moon, and all the stars combined.

Even Leilani couldn’t suppress a dark chuckle. She turned to him, her gaze piercing, and after a long moment, she shook her head, her voice firm. “No.”

“Please.”

“We’ll discuss it later in court,” she replied softly, her tone almost mocking. “…and our first hearing is in two days, so be prepared. For now, I’ll have to file a restraining order against the three of you, so please do not return here. Thank you.”

Her words, delivered with a calmness that belied their impact, struck me right in the core. I shuddered, but before I could respond, Kael interjected.

“You’re actually going to file a restraining order against us? Really, Leilani?”

“I’m already in the process, Alpha Stormborn,” she said, her voice smooth yet cutting. “So please, just leave.”

Damn it.

That hurt more than the time I had a tattoo inked on my spine. It stung more than the moments I had witnessed her with Frostclaw. No, this was the most painful thing I had ever heard in my life.

Reeling from the blow, I turned away and began to gather the scattered gifts from the table. My brothers, despite their evident distress, followed suit, mimicking my actions in a silent acknowledgment of our shared defeat.

We cleared the office in a matter of moments, our eyes lingering on Leilani, who seemed to regard us as mere phantoms—unimportant and inconsequential.

I needed to escape this place before my heart shattered completely.

Kael was the first to exit her office, followed closely by Caelum. When it was finally my turn to leave, I stole one last glance at her—really looked at her—and my heart plummeted into the depths of despair. I realized something profoundly disheartening: Leilani wasn’t just cold toward us; she had completely detached herself from us. The love we once shared felt like a distant memory, and the mate bond that had once pulsed strongly between us had all but faded.

How could this be happening?

As if sensing my gaze, she lifted her eyes to meet mine, and her expression twisted into a sneer. “Stop looking!”

I complied immediately, my cheeks aflame as I turned away from her.

If there was one thing I had come to appreciate about this new version of Leilani, it was her fierce resilience. While my brothers and I often found ourselves on the receiving end of her wrath, it was a comfort to know she was still our mate, and that she excelled in her defiance.

But tell me, why was it that just ten minutes after we left the Frostclaw Inc. building, we received a text from Alpha Garfield, our newest investor, announcing his withdrawal from our corporation to partner with a more promising firm?

Kael was visibly distressed as he attempted to convince him to reconsider, but his efforts were in vain. According to Garfield, Frostclaw Inc.’s team, led by a woman named ‘Ms. Sinclair,’ had recently developed a groundbreaking prototype that was more efficient and faster than our current model. I didn’t need a seer to tell me that this was Leilani’s doing.

She had orchestrated this, perhaps not directly, but as a clear warning to us.

And while I should have been furious about the financial loss looming over us, I found myself oddly entertained.

How often does one encounter a woman capable of challenging you in such a profound way?

Kael, however, was deeply affected by the news. He picked up his phone, his expression darkening as he muttered, “She’s taking this too far. I need to call her and find out why she keeps sabotaging our business every time we have a disagreement.” I watched, half-amused, as he pressed his phone to his ear, falling into silence.

A minute passed, then two, and suddenly his face fell, his skin paling as he muttered, “She blocked me…”

I froze.

Wait, what?

Caelum tried his luck too, but after several fruitless attempts, he frowned and whispered, “I think she blocked me as well.”

“Zevran, call her!” Kael urged, desperation creeping into his voice. “I doubt she would block you, and we need to discuss this!”

But I hesitated.

I didn’t want to join this madness, not when my heart felt so fragile. Even Hades himself would know that calling her, only to discover I had been blocked too, would shatter me completely.

No, I couldn’t endure that!

Conclusion

In the aftermath of our disastrous attempt to reconcile with Leilani, the emotional weight of our failure hung heavily in the air. Each step away from her office felt like a retreat from a battlefield, our hearts bruised and our spirits low. I could sense the profound shift in our bond, a painful reminder that the love we had once shared had been overshadowed by hurt and misunderstandings. Leilani’s fierce resilience was both admirable and heartbreaking. She had transformed from the woman we cherished into a formidable force, one that we had unwittingly pushed away. As I walked alongside my brothers, the silence between us was thick with unspoken regrets, each of us grappling with the reality that we had lost her, perhaps for good.

Yet, amid the despair, a flicker of something unexpected ignited within me—an odd sense of admiration for Leilani’s strength. She had taken control of her narrative, refusing to be a victim of our mistakes, and in doing so, she had challenged us to rise above our shortcomings. The news of Alpha Garfield’s withdrawal felt like a bitter pill to swallow, yet I couldn’t shake the feeling of fascination at how she wielded her power. As my brothers scrambled to reach out to her, I remained rooted in my uncertainty, afraid to face the possibility of rejection. But deep down, I knew that healing would require more than just apologies and gifts; it would demand understanding, patience, and a willingness to confront the truth of our actions. The road ahead was daunting, but perhaps, just perhaps, it was a journey worth taking if it meant reclaiming the love we had lost.
