A Mix-up Made Me His Enemy’s Woman 116

Chapter 116

After a brief lapse, Julian quickly regained his composure.

“Evan,” he said calmly.

“Dad!” Evan looked visibly excited. “Dad, this is Ms. Nora. Her name is Nora Ashford!”

The unexpected introduction left Nora momentarily at a loss.

She couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling stirred by the way the father–and–son duo were looking

at her.

“Since you’re here, Mr. Brennan, I’ll take my leave. I have an appointment with my boyfriend, so I’ll excuse myself.”

Boyfriend?

Julian had yet to fully recover from his earlier shock when this new piece of information

reached him.

He pressed his lips together and gave a restrained nod. “Thank you, Ms. Ashford.”

He studied her expression carefully, but she merely waved calmly and turned to leave. If it were the woman he had been looking for, she would not have shown such flawless composure.

Could it really be possible for two people in this world to look so strikingly alike?

“Dad! Did you see that? Doesn’t she look just like Mom?”

Julian brushed away the hand gripping the hem of his jacket. “Evan, she isn’t I’ve told you, your mother has passed away.”

your mother.

Evan’s eyes instantly reddened. “I don’t believe it! If she’s gone, why didn’t you take me to visit her grave? Dad, you’re lying! You’re a bad person!”

“Evan!” Julian’s patience finally wore thin. He loosened his tie, forcing his anger down. “If you ever run off like this again, I won’t come to pick you up. Do you understand?

“And since you’re staying at your Aunt Betty’s place, you need to behave and not cause trouble for others. What you did just now caused trouble for Ms. Ashford.”

Tears streamed down Evan’s face as he sobbed. He murmured through his cries, “Dad, you’re

so mean.”

His crying grew loud enough to draw the attention of those around them.

With a sigh, Julian lifted him with one arm and headed for the car.

“Behave, Evan. You need to learn how to manage your emotions.”

Julian, naturally rigid and solemn, had completely forgotten that Evan was only a six–year- old child, one who could hardly be expected to regulate his emotions.

Eventually, Evan cried himself into exhaustion and fell asleep, slumped against the back seat.

Julian drove him to Silas‘ home, arriving just as Bethany returned.

She called out, “Julian?”

He nodded slightly. “I brought Evan over. He’s upset with me. I may need to trouble you to look after him for a few days.”

Bethany glanced at the child sleeping soundly in the back seat, his eyes still red, and smiled gently. She said, “Don’t worry, Julian. I’ll sleep with him tonight. Children’s emotions come quickly and fade just as fast. Don’t worry.”

Julian replied succinctly, “Thank you. I’ll be going now. I won’t disturb you.”

Bethany then asked Jane to carry Evan back to his room. She carefully helped him change, then tucked him in with meticulous care.

Looking at the boy–so small, and somehow heart–wrenching to behold–she suddenly wondered whether having a child of her own one day would be just as difficult.

The thought startled Bethany at once. After all, her marriage was little more than a facade. Where would a child even come from? She was clearly thinking too much.
