WARONA NAOMI SEBOTHOMA

I woke up early in the morning, I had my breakfast before taking a bath today. I did my morning routine, I’ll just wear my school skirt and white short sleeve T-shirt and make my tie short, my school blazer and short white socks. I brushed my hair and wore earrings. I went to brush my teeth and pack my bag. I cleaned around my room and went to prepare my lunch box. I placed it in my bag and watched TV.
At 6:58am I took my bag and exited the house, I locked and went to stand over the gate. Nothando came to me when our school transport showed up from the top corner of the street.
Nothando : are you okay?
Naomi : I’m good (smiles)
Nothando : so… Did you call him?
Naomi : yeah(sigh) all I can say is that I’m going to focus on my studies from now on.
Nothando : I guess things didn’t go well when you talked to him.
Naomi : we didn’t even talk.
I answered getting inside the school transport, we greeted the driver and went straight to the backseat. She took out a takeaway and opened it. Ohh, chocolate cake!!! She gave me a plastic fork and we digged in.
Nothando : we can go to the mall after school. We’ll change and go there just to refresh your mind… You know.
Naomi : I’d love that. I’ll save some money for snacks.
Nothando : okay. I’ll do the same. We might just buy matching outfits as well, I have enough money on me.
Naomi : okay, next time it’ll be on me though.
Nothando : okay. I can already feel the vibe, I’m so going to enjoy this evening. Oh and I’ll take care of your hair, we will do straight backs. Short with beads or long?
Naomi : short with beads.
Nothando : okay then.
She smiles.
Naomi : you wanna spoil me?
Nothando : yeah. I don’t have a friend here, you’re my new friend. It’s been 4 years without friends so I wanna show how much I appreciate you.
Naomi : why don’t you have friends?
Nothando : I’m “too thick”
She says making quotation marks with her fingers. She then smiles at me and looks away. There’s nothing wrong with being thick.
Naomi : there’s nothing wrong with being thick.
Nothando : yeah but then it’s a problem, I couldn’t make friends because of being thick and because I’m dark skinned. But guess what? I’ve accepted myself the way I am and I wouldn’t change myself anywhere. Heyy I’m beautiful, dark-dindi lasekasi.
We giggled and did the high five. I love this soul.

She got in class and when she stood at the door, she looked at me and then back at the learners.
Qhawe : you’re late Ms Sebothoma.
Naomi : sorry sir I didn’t know that we’re attending.
Qhawe : I sent you guys a message on WhatsApp last night.
Naomi : I ran out of data sorry.
Qhawe : please wait outside, I’ll deal with you after my session.
Naomi : but…
Qhawe : I don’t wanna argue Ms Sebothoma.
She slowly turned on her heels and head out.
Qhawe : please answer those questions ASAP, I’ll be back in five minutes.
I exited the classroom the classroom and went to her. I cleared my throat and she looked up and me and stepped back.
Naomi : sir I…
Qhawe : what did you mean when you said you’re going to stay away from me? Are you changing locations?
Naomi : is it safe to go to class of I must go to the principal’s office for being late?
Qhawe : (sigh) Naomi please, don’t do that
Naomi : do what? Keep my distance? I meant it. And yes I’m leaving this place, I can’t keep on seeing your face.
Qhawe : but why?
Naomi : because I feel like it’s wrong okay? (Sigh) look, this is not a good place to talk, I just wanna go to class. I’m sorry I’m late but can I go to class now?
Qhawe : at least tell me what feels wrong…
Naomi : I… I just want to join the others.
I sighed and bit my lower lip staring at her.
Qhawe : fine, I’ll call you though.
Naomi : okay, I’ll wait for your call.
Qhawe : go to class.
Naomi : yes sir.
She walked in class and I sighed then followed her.
Qhawe : alright class, are you done?
“yes sir”
