Save Your Pleas: I’m With Your Best Friend Now Novel Chapter 37

Chapter 37

Evangeline stared at her phone. The call had already dropped.

She dialed Asher again.

The ringtone went on for 30 seconds. No answer.

Her frown deepened. No matter where Asher was or how important the meeting was, he always picked up her calls within ten seconds.

Even if he couldn’t talk, he would at least answer briefly and say he’d call back later. He had

never left her in silence.

She bit down on her lip. Her nails dug into her palm.

Wasn’t Juliet asking for a divorce supposed to push Asher farther away? Why did it feel like it was pulling him back instead?

She tossed her phone onto the bed and walked to the window.

The city lights of Navalton were irritatingly dazzling.

Her mind drifted back to years ago.

The first time she saw Asher was in her father’s study.

She had been carrying a coffee tray. Before she even reached him, her attention was caught by the backlit silhouette standing by the window.

The young man was tall and sharp. He was like a sheathed blade that radiated strength.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Evangeline steadied herself and gently said, “Hi. Are you one of my dad’s students?”

The man turned around.

Her heartbeat stopped in that instant.

Light traced the contours of his sculpted features. His face was flawlessly handsome.

Beneath his sharp browbones were his mesmerizing eyes. Just one glance was enough to draw her soul in completely.

He took the mug. His voice was polite but distant. “Thank you.”

It was just two words, but they struck her heart like a spell.

From the very first second she saw him, Evangeline knew she wanted him for life.

From then on, every time Asher visited her house, she found excuses to get close to him.

But no matter what she said, he only nodded politely and replied with the fewest words possible.

He was dismissive to the extreme.

She refused to give up. “Are you free this weekend? My dad wants to invite you to dinner.”

“Depends.”

Asher didn’t even look at her.

For a long time, Evangeline believed Asher was simply born cold and treated everyone the

same.

That was until he brought Juliet with him.

It was raining hard that day.

Juliet followed Asher inside and whispered, “My socks are wet. It feels awful.”

Asher had her sit on the bench by the door and borrowed a towel. Kneeling on one knee, he pulled off her wet socks and carefully dried her feet.

“Careful, you’ll catch a cold.”

His voice was low and gentle. It was filled with a tenderness Evangeline had never heard

before.

Juliet laughed and patted his shoulder. “I’m not made of glass.”

“In my eyes, you are.”

Asher’s smile was like sunlight breathing through snow. It was impossibly warm.

Evangeline froze. So, he could smile.

One time at dinner, Evangeline had offered him some fish. “Ash, this fish is really fresh. You should try it.”

“Thanks. I’ll get some myself,” he declined politely.

He turned around, took a piece of fish, Juliet’s plate.

Juliet blushed. “I can do it myself.”

“Didn’t you get a bone stuck last time?” he said. “My eyesight’s better than yours.’

All the coldness in his features melted away.

There was another time when Evangeline had studied an obscure philosophy book in hopes of impressing him. She prepared her arguments and quoted passages in front of him.

Asher listened, then said flatly, “Interesting perspective.”

Then he lowered his head and went back to his phone.

Meanwhile, when Juliet casually asked, “Did the project you worked on today go smoothly?”

Asher immediately set his phone aside. His coldness vanished.

“It was fine. They were pretty cooperative.”

He even continued the topic on his own and explained the details of the negotiation to her. “If you’re interested, I can take you to the site next time.”

Juliet smiled. “I don’t understand any of that.”

“I just want you there.”

His patience and warmth were all reserved for Juliet alone.

Evangeline witnessed it all and hated every moment of it.

Why?

Why should Juliet -a housekeeper’s daughter-be the one to receive all of Asher’s warmth?
