Chapter 40
Vivian had just washed away the day and lay down in the bedroom when the knocking started again.
“Vivian, the living room is cold. Can you let me come into the bedroom and sleep with you?” Logan’s voice carried hope for reconciliation. He wished that Vivian would relent and let him into the room.
“I’m still sick.” He refused to believe she could be so cold–hearted as to ignore him when he
was ill.
The next second, he heard a cool, emotionless voice from inside the room. There wasn’t the
slightest trace of gentleness, only seriousness and resolve.
“My grandmother hated the idea of unmarried couples staying together in someone else’s home while she was alive. We haven’t even registered our marriage yet, and we haven’t held the wedding either. Are you sure you want to make her angry?”
Logan fell silent for a few seconds, feeling as though the gaze behind him had intensified.
He exhaled sharply and gave up.
A trace of irritation surfaced in Logan’s eyes.
His fever had just broken today, but he had yet to recover from his cold. If he were to spend
another night on the couch, his condition would turn for the worse by tomorrow.
However, he wasn’t afraid of his illness getting serious. After all, it was only a cold. Besides, this could be his chance to reconcile with Vivian. Perhaps she would relent out of concern.
But the cold of the night was truly hard to endure.
And Vivian was acting too indifferently toward him. It left his heart tight and heavy with
discomfort.
Logan said, “Vivian, if I can’t come in, can you at least give me a blanket?”
“Aren’t you here to apologize to my grandmother? How could someone who wants to repent possibly fall asleep?” Her voice carried undisguised mockery.
Logan awkwardly rubbed the bridge of his nose and murmured, “The temperature in Baymoor dropped today, and my cold hasn’t gotten better yet.”
Vivian replied, “It was cold when my grandmother passed away, too. During that time, I kept

vigil for her night after night, almost without sleeping.”
Logan’s voice dropped lower. “I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.”
Vivian did not respond again and closed her eyes.
Logan stood at the door for a while, then walked over and sat down in the living room.
He tried to avoid letting his gaze fall on Eleanor’s memorial portrait, yet he couldn’t help but search for that line of sight.
He kept feeling as though Eleanor was staring at him with a stern, reproachful gaze–as if she knew every shameful thing he had done.
Logan took a deep breath and forcefully repressed the guilt rising from within. Then, he took out his phone and went on social media to distract himself.
At a glance, he saw the contact he had pinned to the top. After hesitating for a moment, he opened the chat and typed out a line. “Are you asleep, Vivi?”
The phone screen lit up. Vivian picked up her phone and glanced at it. Seeing that the message was from Logan, she frowned slightly. Then, she muted notifications from him and closed her
eyes.
She had an appointment tomorrow to bring Kingston to take a look at the Halcyon Group’s project. She was also planning on urging Kingston to hurry up with the contract.
There were only eight days left. She needed to deal with these matters as quickly as possible.
Logan sent Vivian a few more messages, but still received no response. Dejected, he felt a splitting headache take hold.
As he raised a hand to massage his temples, the phone vibrated.
He hurriedly picked it up, only to find no reply in the chat window. Instead, a message popped up on another app from Sloane.
“Logan, I don’t know why, but my stomach hurts so much. Have you already gone to bed with Vivian? I didn’t want to message and disturb you, but I’m really scared.”
Logan sprang up from the couch and rushed to the courtyard.
After taking a few steps, he stopped and turned to look back at the house.
He hesitated for a moment before finally walking to Vivian’s bedroom door and raising his
hand to knock. “Vivi, I have something urgent to take care of and need to step out. Tomorrow, I’ll—”

“Get out!” Vivian had just fallen asleep and was jolted awake, so she felt incredibly annoyed.
Logan froze for a moment. Knowing he was in the wrong, he reluctantly humbled himself.” Vivian, I really do have an urgent matter to attend to. I’ll come over tomorrow to be with you. Rest early.”
Vivian did not answer.
Logan stood at the door with a frown, hesitating. He had a nagging feeling that if he left today, Vivian would never forgive him for the rest of his life.
“Vivi…” He spoke softly, DR MAR

Logan pulled out his phone to see the caller ID showing Diana’s name. He hurriedly answered, deliberately raising his voice.
