I Cancel the Engagement and Level Way Up Chapter 38

Chapter 38

The neighbor saw that Logan genuinely looked like someone who knew nothing; her face tightened with a disdain she didn’t bother to hide.

She said, “You don’t even know about something this big? What kind of boyfriend are you? You’re the boss of a company, and you couldn’t even bear to pay some money for the funeral? Figures that rich men are always the stingiest. No wonder Vivian doesn’t want to marry you

anymore…‘

Vivian had other arrangements on the day of the wedding, so she had informed the neighbors in advance not to attend, saying the wedding had been canceled.

Eleanor cared a great deal about appearances, and Vivian didn’t want them coming to watch a spectacle. She wanted Eleanor to at least be able to rest in peace.

Since her neighbor had brought it up, Vivian hurried out, not wanting too much to be revealed

to Logan.

She opened the front door and stepped outside, cutting the neighbor off apologetically, “I’m

sorry

for disturbing you, Willow. I’ll handle this myself.”

Willow Thompson nodded and shot Logan a guarded glance. Then, she turned slightly toward Vivian and said, “If you need any help, just holler.”

Vivian nodded.

After Willow went back inside, Logan looked at Vivian with a face full of guilt and remorse. Vivian, why didn’t you tell me about something this important? If you had just said the word, I would have rushed back immediately to be with you.”

Vivian looked at him calmly, her gaze not betraying any emotion. “Wouldn’t that have ruined your fun? You finally got some time to relax amid your busy schedule. How could I bear to interrupt your good mood?”

Logan’s expression went pale, and a flicker of guilt flashed through his eyes. “Vivian, I didn’t go on that trip for Sloane. I was accompanying a client from a partner company. I just brought her along to broaden her horizons.”

Vivian looked at him quietly. “I see. Mr. Whitfield, you truly have the heart of a saint.‘

Even an intern from a partner company could receive such attentive care.

Logan was left speechless by her sarcasm. He didn’t know how much Vivian had already learned, so he was forced to probe carefully. “Vivian, we’ve been together for so many years.

I’ve never done anything out of line. I hope you can trust me.”

Vivian merely scoffed and said nothing more.

Logan did not know what to say. He took a deep breath, and his gaze was serious as he studied Vivian’s expression.

When he saw no trace of anger in her eyes, he relaxed a little.

Vivian probably didn’t know much. It was perhaps some hearsay and vague rumors.

If she had solid proof, there was no way she would still be tolerating him. She would have confronted him outright. “Vivi, I’m really sorry. I wasn’t by your side when your grandmother passed away. I’ve realized my mistake, and I’ll do everything I can to make it up to you for the rest of my life.”

Vivian looked up at him and smiled faintly.

Was he going to make it up to her by secretly setting up a family with another woman? Was he going to secretly have an illegitimate child who would one day compete with her for assets as a form of apology?

Logan didn’t see the mockery in her eyes. Thinking his apology had earned her forgiveness, he stepped toward her and reached out to pull her into his arms.

Vivian deftly avoided him, her gaze turning cool.

Logan awkwardly withdrew his hand, which had been hanging mid–air. “Vivian, I know you’re still angry with me, but we’re about to get married. I don’t want you to marry me while carrying any resentment.

His words sounded sincere, and his gaze was filled with deep remorse and self–blame.

Vivian looked at his face in silence, then said slowly, “So for these last few days, we’d better not see each other.”

Logan was suddenly on alert. “Why?”

Could it be that, just like Willow had said, she really didn’t want to marry him anymore?
