Chapter 23
Vivian held her phone, signaling for Kingston to let her scan his payment code.
Without hesitation, he pulled out his phone, opened the app, and held it toward her.
She breathed a quiet sigh of relief and scanned it before asking, “How much is this coat?”
As she spoke, she kept her eyes lowered, waiting for Kingston to name a price so she could enter the amount. But when she looked at her screen, what appeared wasn’t a payment page but a friend request notification.
Vivian paused, confusion flickering in her eyes, but she still tapped to add him as a contact. Maybe the coat cost too much for a direct scan payment to process.
He tapped the screen twice with his long, elegant fingers, approving her friend request.
She opened the transfer function and said quietly, “I’ll send you the money right away.‘
Kingston pocketed his phone and said indifferently, “I don’t know what that coat costs. Once they give me a price, I’ll let you know.”
Vivian nodded, masking her surprise.
He gave her an unreadable glance, then turned and walked back inside with the miniature coat.
Vivian stood rooted to the spot, hesitating before gathering her courage to follow him inside. She placed the Whitfield Group materials from her bag onto the coffee table.
“Mr. Howard, these are Whitfield Group’s financial statements from recent years. I hope you’ll seriously consider this deal.”
Kingston settled onto the couch, one hand resting on his leg, his fingers clearly defined. His fingers drummed silently on his thigh, throwing her heartbeat off rhythm.
Vivian stood to the side, trying to steady herself. In his presence, she felt like a rookie just entering the workforce. She hadn’t felt this nervous since pitching to investors with Logan
years ago.
She had no idea what Kingston was thinking, or how she could steer this deal her way. She didn’t want to look desperate. When he said nothing, she took a seat on the couch across from him and tried to convince him with genuine sincerity.
Vivian had prepared her pitch before coming. Even though Kingston showed no interest, she pressed on with her presentation on Whitfield Group’s current status.

She sat upright, hands folded lightly in her lap, as she outlined the benefits Whitfield Group could bring to Howard Group.
Kingston watched her earnest demeanor without interrupting. Only when she paused did he ask, “If Whitfield Group is so great, why are you selling your shares?”
Vivian pressed her lips together and fell silent for a long moment.
He wasn’t in a hurry and waited patiently for her answer.
Selling her shares wasn’t hard to admit, but telling Kingston felt impossible. She bit her lip and made up an excuse.
“Because I’m tired of working. I just want to go back to my family, laze around at home, and let my sister support me. Is that acceptable?”
Kingston didn’t call out her lie. He lifted his eyelids slightly and reached for the materials Vivian had placed on the table.
Her documentation was thorough. There were even strategic proposals filled with her plans for Whitfield Group’s future. The documents practically spoke for themselves, showing her meticulous planning and dedication.
“And your condition?” His voice was low, a single reminder that he hadn’t forgotten her
caveat.
