The Throne of Thorns Novel Chapter 518

Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 518

They were barely out of the main hall when Faith’s frustration boiled over.

“Solomon, what were you thinking? How could you agree to Larissa’s demands? Do you really think Grandpa would have let me suffer?

Solomon took a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, lit one, and took a long drag. “You still don’t see it, do you? Grandpa’s attitude toward Larissa.”

“Of course I saw it. I don’t understand why a man of his stature is so indulgent with her,” Faith said, completely baffled.

Solomon exhaled a stream of smoke. “You haven’t figured it out yet. Grandpa was putting on a show for us.”

“What do you mean?”

“It means we’ve been wrong all along,” Solomon said coldly. “We thought Grandpa was seriously considering a new heir. But from his behavior tonight, it’s clear that was never his intention. He just used this situation with Larissa as an excuse to transfer a portion of the company shares to Haskell ahead of schedule.”

Faith’s eyes widened in disbelief. “That’s impossible. If Grandpa wanted Haskell to remain the heir, why would he have announced at the engagement party that he would name the successor in three months?”

“Whetstones,” Solomon said flatly.

Faith stared at him, confused. “What?”

“He wants us to be Haskell’s whetstones,” Solomon said with chilling certainty. “To sharpen him, now that his legs are healing.”

“Then what do we do?” Faith was beginning to suspect he was right. There was no other explanation for their grandfather’s behavior tonight.

In all of Regal City, only the old matriarch of the Lincoln family could command such deference from her grandfather. And yet, he had shown such tolerance for a junior like Larissa. It could only mean one thing: he still favored Haskell.

“Solomon, if what you’re saying is true, then what’s the point of all this effort?” Faith’s anger gave way to a bitter sense of injustice. She couldn’t accept that her family was destined to be nothing more than a footnote to Haskell’s success, forever relegated to the African operations, no matter how well they did.

Solomon didn’t answer.

Seeing the dark look on his face, Faith didn’t press him further.

They were in the car, driving away from the estate, when. Solomon finally spoke, his voice

as cold as ice. “I’ve already made my decision I will be the next heir of the Palmer family, no matter what it takes.”

He would never forget the whispers and snickers from the other young scions when he had left for Africa with his father.

“Look at Solomon, acting so tough around us. In the end, he’s just a stepping stone for Haskell, just like his father. Sent off to Africa. They call it ‘training, but we all know it’s exile.”

Why? Why, when they were both Palmers, was he the one relegated to a place far away from home like that?

He refused to accept it. He had sworn to himself that he would become the one in power back in Regal City.

When he heard that his grandfather was planning to officially name Haskell as the heir, he had considered arranging an “accident” in Africa. But Haskell’s brother Draven had beaten

him to it.

Haskell hadn’t died, but his legs had been crippled. Solomon thought his chance had finally come.

Surely his grandfather wouldn’t hand over the family to a cripple. And, as he had hoped, the announcement of the heir was delayed.

Solomon thought he truly had a chance. But tonight, he realized that Zoltan had never intended to give up on Haskell.

If he couldn’t win through internal competition, then he would bring in an outside force. And the best outside force was, of course, the Lincoln family.

Solomon crushed the cigarette in his hand. If he couldn’t have it, he would rather destroy it. The Palmer family’s domestic empire might fall, but his operations in Africa would remain standing.
