She wanted fifty, eighty, a hundred more years with them.
After dinner, Larissa went to the herb garden to tend to the Phoenix Herb and other medicinal plants. When she was finished, she showered and sat on her bed, towel–drying her hair as she read the messages Avril had sent her earlier.
[Larissa! Torrin didn’t message me at all today! He must have finally realized he can’t compete with Haskell and given up!]
Larissa texted back: [You’ve suffered enough.]
Avril replied instantly: [It was no trouble at all! He was a decent way to pass the time. Now that he’s gone, I’m actually a little bored!]
[OMG, Larissa, that asshole is badmouthing you in the group chat again. I’m going in!]
Her hair dry, Larissa leaned back against her pillows and opened the “Regal City Tattler” group chat.
Prodigal Prince: [So, the big “Heaven’s Will” meeting is tomorrow. I hear Gale Entertainment is bringing 300 million. I wonder what our dear Ms. Judson is planning to offer.]
[Three million? Or maybe thirty?]
[The entire company of Starlight Media isn’t even worth thirty million!]
Avril’s Joy: [@Prodigal Prince, which of these leashes do you like? You’re going to need one soon. I’m picking one out for you, on Larissa’s behalf. See how considerate I am?]
Prodigal Prince: [Avril, I’m just giving Larissa a friendly warning. Why are you sticking your nose in it? You’re the one who needs a leash. You’re acting like Larissa’s little puppy. It’s an embarrassment to the Palmer family!]
Avril sent another link. This time, it was for a dog muzzle.
Avril’s Joy: [My mistake. You need this more. To stop you from biting people.]
Prodigal Prince: [Avril, I am so done with you!]
Avril’s Joy: [Ooh, look! He’s getting ready to bite! So scary!]
After scrolling through the chat for a few minutes, Larissa called Leila. She instructed her to go to Paddy’s Home the next day with Ursa for the rights meeting.
“Why me? I don’t have the authority to secure the rights…” Leila said, sounding surprised.
Larissa tickled Sage, who had hopped onto the bed and was purring at her feet. “The meeting will be live–streamed. There’s a blind evaluation at the beginning. I just need you to show everyone watching that you understand the book better than anyone else, that you are the only one who can play the lead.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, then a firm voice replied, “I understand. I won’t let you down, Ms. Judson.”
After hanging up with Leila, she called Haskell.

“Haskell, I forgot to ask you earlier. Are you free tomorrow? Come with me to the rights meeting for ‘Heaven’s Will‘. We can put Lucius, that eternal second–best, in his place. What do you say?”
He chuckled. “It would be my honor.”

“If you’d rather not, we don’t have to.”
“What do you want to talk about?” she asked, realizing she didn’t want to hang up either.
“Anything. I just like hearing your voice.”
