“Maybe,” another person countered, “but it’s better than staying here and waiting for the company to go bankrupt. At least over there, we can get a nice payout. And if we perform well, maybe they’ll keep
us on.”
“Well, I’ve made up my mind. I’m leaving,” the first speaker declared. “That speech our new CEO gave this morning was full of empty promises. I don’t believe she has what it takes. You all can do what you want.”
The others fell silent again.
“Ms. Judson, what are you doing standing here?”
It was Ursa, the secretary.
A wave of panic washed over the employees. They quickly turned back to their computers, feigning work. Had she heard everything?
But then, those who had already decided to leave had another thought. So what if she heard? They were leaving anyway.
Larissa smiled. “Oh, nothing. Just eavesdropping.”
Ursa blinked. “Ah.”
Larissa pushed the door open and surveyed the office. “Anyone who wants to resign can submit their application to Ursa today.”
Without another word, she walked to her office.
Ursa noticed the uneasy expressions on many of the employees‘ faces. “You’re all thinking of resigning?”
No one answered.
A colleague from the PR department asked, “Ursa, did you get the email from Gale Entertainment?”
Only then did Ursa realize that she wasn’t the only one who had received the generous offer. She understood their dilemma–the high salary was tempting, and the future of Starlight Media was uncertain. She couldn’t bring herself to persuade them to stay.
“You heard Ms. Judson,” she said sternly. “If you want to resign, give me your applications today.”
The PR colleague pressed, “What about you, Ursa?”
“I’m not resigning,” Ursa said firmly. “Any company that would resort to such a self–destructive tactic to take down a rival isn’t one I trust. I’d rather take my chances here at Starlight Media.”
She had spent her lunch break researching their new CEO. The news articles about her were filled with stories of her outsmarting her rivals. It was thrilling. She had decided to bet her future on this new leader.
