Wings of Broken Time by Alina Das 367
Hearing the cough, Vivica’s eyes widened. She whipped her head around to look at her son on the sofa. His mouth was slightly parted, his chest rising and falling with each rasping cough,
It was him. It was really her son!
“Leopold, you’re awake!”
Vivica reached out, her hand trembling as she touched his pale cheek.
Leopold’s brow furrowed, his eyelashes fluttering as he struggled to open his eyes.
Finley stared at his brother in astonishment, a sliver of relief finally piercing the gloom that had settled over him. At least one good thing had happened today.
Paxton felt a flicker of joy, but it was quickly extinguished by the weight of the morning’s disastrous events. Even with Leopold awake, it wouldn’t change their grim reality.
The person most affected by Leopold’s awakening, however, was Honora. She couldn’t believe he had actually woken up. What about the drugs she had administered?
She cursed her biological father under her breath. He was as unreliable as ever. He’d promised the man he hired to deal with Larissa was an experienced predator, but the man had simply vanished
without a trace.
What now? Leopold already knew she had hired someone to assault Larissa… If he told everyone…
No, wait. A thought struck Honora.
Before, she had been terrified of her pure, innocent image shattering in front of her adoptive family. After all, they were rich and powerful. But now? They were outcasts, cut off from the Judson fortune. What was there left to be afraid of?
Nothing. There was no reason to be afraid.
Besides, all she had done was hire someone to defile Larissa. She could easily claim she did it out of fear of losing their affection. It wasn’t like she had caused any real, lasting harm to the family.
While Honora’s mind raced, Leopold’s eyes fluttered open completely.
“Leopold! Leopold, you’re awake, you’re really awake!” Vivica cried, her voice thick with emotion.
Avril’s friends watched in awe.
“He was in a coma just a minute ago,” one whispered. “Larissa just pulled a needle out of his head and he woke up. It’s incredible!”
Avril puffed out her chest. “See? I told you my cousin–in–law was amazing!”
Haskell smiled. “Larissa, it seems the real show is about to begin.”
“Yes,” she replied. “The part where the dogs turn on each other.”
Leopold blinked, his vision slowly clearing until he focused on his mother’s face.
“Mom…” he rasped, his voice dry and scratchy.

“Oh, Leopold! You scared me half to death I was so afraid you would be lost to us forever if that had happened, I don’t know how I could have gone on
Vivica’s words dissolved into sobs as she clung to his hand, her body shaking with relief and residual
fear.
Leopold licked his dry lips, his gaze darting around the room as if searching for someone. Suddenly, a figure rushed to his side, and a voice–a venomous, cloying voice that had haunted his comatose state–spoke.
“Leopold, you’re finally awake, thank God…
“I’ve been so worried about you these past few days”
“I haven’t been able to sleep, just praying for you to wake up. I told God I’d give half my life just to have you back.”
Leopold’s eyes, still adjusting to the light, snapped wide open at the sound of Honore’s voice. His expression soured into one of pure disgust and hatred.
He had heard everything. Though his body had been paralyzed, he had heard every single word spoken in the house that morning.
Their family was completely ruined,
