Zendar’s words made the smile freeze on Paxton’s face.
Neville said mockingly, “Don’t waste your breath, Paxton. Zendar came here tonight for Larissa’s engagement party. He has no intention of discussing business with you.”
Zendar scoffed, making no effort to spare Paxton’s feelings. “A man of his character wants to partner with the Schwartz family? He must be dreaming.”
The nearby guests began to whisper again.
“What’s going on between Zendar and Paxton?”
“Looks like Paxton tried to cozy up to him, but Zendar isn’t interested.”
“And it seems Zendar is here for the Judson heiress, not as a guest of the Palmers.”
“I heard about that whole mess at the Judson family. At her welcome banquet, the real heiress revealed that Paxton and his wife are her biological parents, but they rejected her because she was a country girl.”
“Well, it looks like that heiress is more impressive than anyone thought, being friends with these three legends!”
“Paxton must be regretting his decision now. What a huge loss!”
The gossip only deepened Paxton’s humiliation. Vivica, Finley, and Honora, watching from their table, had a mixture of expressions on their faces.
Kiernan, meanwhile, looked at his second son with unconcealed disappointment. It was clear now that Paxton was out of the running for Judson Pharmaceuticals.
Josette turned to her husband in disbelief, whispering fiercely, “Jagger Lincoln, what is going on? You said Zendar would talk to my brother for your sake!”
Jagger, annoyed at being questioned, snapped back, “I’m Jagger Lincoln! Who in this city wouldn’t show me respect? Even the Palmers do! How was I supposed to know Zendar was so close to your niece?”
He didn’t bother to lower his voice, and Kiernan, Finley, and Honora all heard him, their attention shifting from Paxton to the bickering couple.
Noticing the family’s stares, Josette grabbed Jagger’s arm under the table. “Keep your voice down…” The thought of her bet with Larissa made her chest tighten. “I told you, if I failed to get this meeting for my brother, I would have to kneel and apologize to Larissa!”
“Enough,” Jagger interrupted impatiently. “My being here tonight is already a huge favor to you and your family. And it’s your own fault for making such a stupid bet with a little girl without knowing all the facts! You brought this on yourself!”
His words made Josette’s blood boil. “I only made that bet because you were so confident you could do it! Now that things have gone wrong, you’re blaming it all on me! Jagger, we’ve been married for vears, do you have any conscience at all?”

“Don’t forget,” Jagger said dismissively, “this was just a marriage of convenience.”
While Josette was fuming and Paxton was wishing the ground would swallow him whole, a clear, pleasant voice cut through the air.
