Starling Tower suddenly went into lockdown. 

I had just stepped into the main lobby when alarms began blaring and security personnel rushed to seal all exits. My stomach instantly knotted with a premonition of trouble 

“What’s happening? 1 asked, grabbing the arm of a passing security guard, 

His face was grim as he answered, A child has gone missing. The building is being secured. If you don’t work here, you need to leave now!” 

My heart sank. “What child? Is it Aria?” 

How would i know? Please exit the building immediately–you’re impeding our operation.” 

I looked back at the lobby, now filled with confused employees gathering in small clusters, speculating about the situation. I had already left the building and couldn’t get back in now that it was locked down. 

But I couldn’t just leave. Not when a child–possibly Aria–was missing, 

Unable to help directly but unwilling to abandon the situation, I circled around to the side of Sterling Tower where a small tree–lined path offered some privacy. From there, I could see the main entrance while remaining somewhat hidden among the trees. 

A small yellow cat appeared seemingly from nowhere, rubbing against my ankles before settling down by my feet. 

I’ve always had a weakness for animals, Growing up in the Wright household, I wasn’t allowed pets. And my current apartment in Wicker Park was too small and old to properly house a pet. I’d resigned myself to adming animals from afar. 

In my anxious state, the cat’s appearance offered a welcome distraction. bent down and gently lifted the yellow tabby onto my lap, where it lazily stretched out, occasionally grooming its fur. 

Crack. The sound of a breaking twig behind me made me straighten up and quickly move my legs to make room for whoever was passing by.
