Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash ` 206
Chapter 206
A deep, gentle male voice came from the stairs. Rebecca didn’t
even lift her head. “Nothing. I’m perfectly happy.”
Mr. Whitman sat down beside her with a cup of tea, his gaze
falling on his daughter’s slightly pale face. “You should take a
look in the mirror. You don’t look happy at all.”
“I’m just too tired. I want to rest for a couple of days.”
“That sounds strange coming from you.”
Mr. Whitman thought for a moment. He knew his daughter so
well, of course he could tell something was off.
After a moment of thought, Mr. Whitman spoke up, “Is it
because of Leo?
I remember his death anniversary is next month.”
He frowned after saying that.
“But in the past, even though you were unhappy on his death
anniversary, you never skipped work like this.”
Chapter 206
Rebecca forced a strained smile as she looked at him.
“Dad, have you been reading too many mystery novels lately?
Isn’t the company busy?”
“It is busy. I just got word today that there are new policy
standards for the pharmaceutical industry. It’s good for the
business. I’m planning to hold a big meeting tomorrow. Do you
want to join?”
“Of course!”
Rebecca perked up and sat up on the sofa.
“We have to get the best pharmaceutical R&D and distribution
rights this time.”
Mr. Whitman looked at his daughter, who had instantly come
back to life, feeling both pleased and pained.
He gently placed his hand over his daughter’s.
“Let’s not rush to talk about work, Rebecca. Tell me honestly,
did something happen?
You’ve been so secretive lately, I have no idea what you’ve been busy with.”
Chapter 206
Rebecca avoided his gaze.
Other than Roderick and Madeleine, she hadn’t told anyone that
she went to see Adrian.
Thinking about it now, it was a good thing she hadn’t let her dad
know.
“What other things could I possibly have going on? It’s just
work, work, work. Dad, look at you, worrying for no reason.”
“I’m not worrying for no reason. It’s just that… you seemed like
you were in love a while ago, and these past two days you’ve
become a completely different person. Are you dating
someone?”
“Pfft…”
Rebecca couldn’t help but sputter.
Dating!
?
That’s ridiculous.
“What are you talking about, Dad? Do I look like I have time to
date?”
Chapter 206
No, I can’t let this topic continue.
With the way her dad was always nagging her to get married, he’d start talking nonsense again.
Rebecca shot up to her feet, grabbed her coat, and headed for
the door. “Dad, I just remembered I have a contract to deal with. I’m leaving now.”
“Hey!
This kid…”
Before Mr. Whitman could finish his sentence, he heard the
front door slam shut with a ‘bang‘.
He sighed helplessly.
“This daughter of mine… sometimes she’s just too strong-
willed.”
Rebecca got in her car, opened the navigation app, and scrolled
through it, not knowing where to go.
Finally, she pouted. “Roderick is losing the company money for his wife’s sake, so it wouldn’t be too much for me to go bother

his wife, right?”
She didn’t know what kind of spell Madeleine had cast on her,
but she felt empty inside right now. She just felt that things
would be a little better if Madeleine were with her.
At nine, Madeleine came home with Roderick after he finished
working late.
Roderick wasn’t actually finished with his work; he just didn’t
want Madeleine to wait for him at the office, so he brought it
home to finish.
“Then I’ll hang out with Kevin for a bit, then come keep you
company in the study.”
“Okay.”
The two of them walked in hand–in–hand and froze when they
saw Rebecca on the sofa.
Rebecca was watching cartoons with Kevin. Hearing the noise,
she turned around and waved with a big smile.
“Hello~”
Roderick’s face fell.
Chapter 206
So much for their evening alone.
Rebecca naturally saw the disgust in Roderick’s dark
expression and narrowed her eyes.
“Not happy to see me?”
“Of course, we are. Why wouldn’t we be?”
Madeleine walked over with a smile, hugged her son first, and
then looked at Rebecca.
“What brings you here so late at night? Is something wrong?”
Rebecca sat back down on the sofa and casually started eating
from the fruit platter Kirsten had prepared for her.
Looking completely at home.
“Nothing’s wrong. I just wasn’t comfortable at home and thought I’d come stay for a couple of days, like a little vacation.”
Roderick came over and sat down, his face dark.
“If you want a vacation, I can buy you a plane ticket. Hawaii or
the Maldives?”
“Neither.”
Chapter 206
Rebecca shook her head with a sly smile.
“I just want to stay at your place. Madeleine, let’s have a
sleepover tonight.”
