Night Carved Paths Into Silence by Zyrel Ash 136
Bradley had a die from somewhere. He was tossing it, catching
it, and having Kevin guess which number was face up.
With one–in–six odds, it wasn’t easy to guess right.
But somehow, Bradley guessed correctly every single time.
At first, the little guy’s expression was normal, but after losing
too many times, his face had started to fall.
“Come on, one more time!”
Bradley laughed and tossed it again, holding out a clenched fist
to Kevin.
“Take a guess. What is it this time?”
“I… guess 4.”
“Alright, then Uncle Bradley will guess 6.”
He opened his palm, and sure enough, the number 6 was on
top..
Chapter 136
Even so, Kevin just kept a straight face and didn’t say anything.
When he heard Madeleine’s footsteps approaching, a flash of
disappointment crossed his eyes, but it vanished just as
quickly.
“Mom.”
Madeleine smiled and walked over, holding her hand out to
Bradley.
Bradley glanced at her. “What?”
“The die. Let me see it.”
“Hey, I’m just playing with a kid, why are you…”
“Give it.”
Bradley pouted but had to hand it over.
11
Madeleine took it, looked at it, and gave it a light squeeze.
Instantly, the number on the die changed.
It was a magic prop.
She shot Bradley a disdainful look. “Cheating against a kid,
really?”
Chapter 136
“Hey, Madeleine, I’ve realized you take things way too
seriously.”
“So what? What’s wrong with taking it seriously for my son?”
Bradley rolled his eyes and ruffled Kevin’s hair. “Go on, get your
dad. We’re heading out.”
Once Kevin was out of earshot, Bradley’s expression turned
serious.
“How’s his therapy going?”
Madeleine sat on the sofa, fiddling with the magic die in her
hand.
“Mr. Eleanor said it’s working, but the progress isn’t very
noticeable. He still has to pull through on his own.”
She could see that Bradley was deliberately using the die to
provoke Kevin, trying to make him angry and let his real
emotions out.
But even though he was so frustrated just now, the kid didn’t
say a single word.
Bradley put his hands behind his head and let out a long sigh.
Chapter 136
“This nephew of mine… he’s really having a tough time.”
Whenever Madeleine saw Bradley, she couldn’t help but
remember the things he’d said the last time he was drunk.
The thought of this guy having a crush on her made Madeleine
feel inexplicably excited.
She deliberately took the scenic route to bring up the topic: “I
see you like kids. Why don’t you get married and have one of
your own?”
“Get married?
You think I’m as lucky as Roderick?”
Madeleine raised an eyebrow, taking his comment as a
compliment.
“Why not? Give it a try. I heard you’ve had a lot of girlfriends.
None of them the one?”
As soon as she said that, Bradley immediately sat up straight.
“Don’t talk nonsense. They weren’t girlfriends.”
Madeleine perked up, leaning a little closer to Bradley to
observe the subtle changes in his expression.
Chapter 136
“Not a girlfriend?
Then what is she, just a fling?
Wow, Bradley, so you’re a player.”
“Madeleine!
Watch your mouth.”
Bradley turned his head, his eyes giving a warning.
“Did Roderick say some nonsense to you? I’m telling you, it’s all
crap.”
11
Madeleine narrowed her eyes and leaned in even closer.
“You’re flustered!”
Bradley glared, about to lose his temper, but then realized that
getting angry now would just prove her right.
Taking a deep breath, Bradley pushed his anger back down.
“I am not.”
“Yes you are, yes you are! Come on, you have to tell me, what’s the deal with those girls around you.”
Chapter 136
“There aren’t any…”
Halfway through his sentence, Bradley spotted Roderick
walking over with Kevin in his arms and quickly stood up as if
he’d grabbed a lifeline.
“You’re ready, right? Let’s go, don’t keep your dad and Mrs.
Miller waiting.”
He really couldn’t handle Madeleine.
Seeing Bradley flee, Madeleine’s face was full of
disappointment. She still hadn’t gotten the full scoop on this
gossip.
What a shame.
Mathew had already driven the car over. Usually, the family
used a seven–seater SUV, but it was sent for maintenance
today, so Mathew was driving another sedan.
There was a child seat in the back of the sedan, so there was
only room for Madeleine’s family of three.
Bradley stood to the side, dumbfounded.
“Hey, what’s the deal?
Chapter 136
No room for me?”
He just happened to be passing by Roderick’s house and had a
colleague drop him off on the way.
His original plan was to hitch a ride with them to the Livingston
manor for dinner.
Who would have thought he wouldn’t be able to hitch a ride at
all.
Roderick got into the car with a cold, indifferent expression,
rolled down the window, and asked him, “There’s still room in
the trunk. Getting in?”
